CDR Class 5 nears completion

After much blood, sweat and tears, the Class 5 is finally running reasonably smoothly under power (that's tempting fate!). Electrical pick up from the track is not perfect, I think partly due to the rigid chassis and maybe to the mazak wheels. I don't know what mazak is like as a conductor and the treads seem to get dirty pretty quickly - they were filthy after 45 minutes on the rolling road. I'm waiting for couplings before doing much more. It all comes apart for painting.

I didn't like the mazak driving wheels on my sample, as I thought the profile was a bit coarse, so I pulled them off the axles and replaced them with 16mm dia tender wheels (I think they were Alan Gibson's) to P4 profile. Being plastic-centred, that tends to reduce some of the shorting problems.....!

Sounds like a good idea, certainly something to bear in mind for the future! I know that Backwoods changed to Romford wheels some time ago, maybe that was one of the reasons.

Many thanks,

John

That change was as far back as 2000. There was a note in my kit to that effect. I thought it was a retrograde step, but there you go.

I used a standard TT back-to-back gauge to set the replacement drivers. That might actually work out slightly wrong, but I haven't actually got any 12mm gauge pointwork worth the name to test it on.

I can believe that, I think that the kit I was building had been around for some time. I couldn't find a suitable gauge either so I used my digital calipers set to 10.5mm (that info came from Backwoods) which conveniently have a locking screw which I had previously found no reason to use!

I tried out the rolling chassis (without motor) on Andy Cundick's old Letterkenny layout and it didn't seem to have any problems

Hi John,

Looks fantastic and well done getting to the end of this rather difficult road. Am I right in thinking that early on these locos were painted black? Ming you they look much better in a nice coat of red paint.

Cheers....Morgan

P.S. The wheels in the one I made were Romfords but were changed for Sharmans

Very early on, This one, No. 5 'Drumboe', will be well into the red period.
