£9 Sows ear...

As mentioned here I managed to secure a 1/35 scale civilian VW Beetle which fitted perfectly into the period for the 891 project.

Bought for the princely sum of £9 (incl P&P!) on eBay and sent from Poland, the kit arrived well packaged damage free. A quick glance through the cellophane wrapped sprue's and all look reasonable.

So yesterday I made a start on the kit as, after all a kit consisting of one sprue, a body molding and some transparent windows cant be too bad to put together cant it?

So I started off test fitting the roof panel into the body molding...that was too small by a good 2mm all round. So once fitted slithers of Evergreen strips were inserted into the gaps and subsequently filled and smoothed. Once all dry I test fitted it to the "chassis molding"...the body was too big or the chassis was too small. So a laborious task of trial and error, trial and error of tweaking with a gentle stroke of a file until that "just fits" fit was achieved. As I progressed fitting the parts thus far, it is apparent that nothing fits. Looking at the body a mold line had been used to represent the gutter trim found on the prototype, however this looked unsightly and looked nothing more than flash. There was nothing I could do with it so it came off and was replaced with some Evergreen strip which will be gently filed down to size later. The molded hinges were also removed as they were large enough to hang a full size door on and again replaced with trusty Evergreen. A quick rescribe of the door shut lines with a Tamiya scriber to square them up/ tidy them up and the results so far arnt bad. A quick test of the "suspension" (seen here on blobs of blue tak) revealed that the Type 1 sits way too high looking like its about to take on the next round of the WRC. With this in mind it is giving me an idea to fabricate my own chassis which I hope will incorporate a "pose-able" front axle.

It may seem that I am being critical about the model, I'm not. I recognise that you dont get much for £9 these days and its clear that the kit itself is not in the leagues of Tamiya. For instance you do not get any lamp reflectors for the head lamps and thus will be something that will need to be scratchbuilt.

This is going to be a nice little challenge calling on the need for a bit of scratchbuilding.

The beetle appears to be progressing well despite you having to make so many modifications to get things to fit. Looking at the tyres they give the impression they are for something more military than street driven. The kit box picture doesn't show that much side tread. The "wings" also look to be slightly flared - possibly for more tyre clearance of a military vehicle.

I'm continuing to watch the progress so don't give up!

Yes the tyres are definatly not your traditional radials! I'm gonna persevere with it as there ain't nothing else out there other than the Citroën Avant...

Looking quite good considering the awful sounding original kit! As a VW restorer I can tell you the front wings are incorrect, where the headlamp bowl bulge is should flow with the wing curve, especially at the front. On the plus side you'd have to be pretty sad to notice this...

The bug paint code information you requested is here The Samba.com along with some excellent photos. It's RMweb for VW folk.

Personally I would use one of these instead, (military kit)as they are pretty representative of the "standard" model produced from 1946-52. They are less good for the more luxurious export models, but standard spec bugs were exported around the world, and like all good vehicles survived for a long time. This kit could be altered in two ways to represent later models.

1. 1953-57 simply cut out the dividing bar in the rear window and remove the bumper over riders and fill in the bumper groove to produce an "oval"

2.1958-64 Cut the back window out square, following the height of the side windows and add a new air intake grill under the windows, then do the bumper mod above. The engine bay lid will be wrong but otherwise ok.

I am not sure that you will get the body proportions right on the kit you are using but you are clearly enjoying the challenge! On the tyre front I would use any tyre with a solid rim that's to scale. There is a wide choice of military kits e.g. staff cars that have better tyres. On the lowering front, just do what we do on the prototype and move the axles up in the floorpan! Either chopping off the wheel spindles or from the chassis is quicker than a scratch build. Ride heigh is not bad, the bug sat plenty high up when new its just that everyone lowers them now.
