Munktells MDR125p 'Speeder' (Part 1)
Built in the early 1950's, the Munktells MDR127's were built as a means to meet a requirement for a Permanent Way trolley type vehicle. The design type was consistent across the track gauges used throughout Sweden from the standard, 't' and 'p' gauges.
Powered by a Volvo B16a engine and fitted out with Volvo truck instruments the vehicle was of a double ended design, however it was only fitted with one driving desk. It was however able to travel in both directions at the same speed, top speed c70km/h. A central jack was provided by means of an access panel at the non driving end, which would enable the vehicle to be lifted and turned about its position or to enable removal off the railway for storage. Carrying capacity was maximum 4 people. Later on during the 1950's the design of these vehicles changed to incorporate pressed steel panels to the body and interior. Many later examples survive in many guises on preserved lines still for filling their intended duties.
Work has started on replicating one of the earlier design vehicle for the 1/35 project.
Seen here the MDR127p takes shape with body and under frame formed from various thicknesses of Plasticard and sprayed up in primer to reveal the areas where further work is required to tidy up any areas of filler. As the axles are positioned so near to the end of the vehicle some visual compromises had to be made. Originally a worm and gear arrangement was intended with a fabricated cover 'hiding' the exposed gear from the end view of the vehicle. This however did not prove to be a successful option due to the size and bulkiness of the solution. In the end a 'Black Bug' power unit has been adapted to fit and provide power. At 1:15 gear ratios, this speeder will certainly live up to its name and once the wheel guard irons are fitted, it is hoped that the drive arrangement will not be so obvious.
A long way to go, however this diminutive prototype is certainly fun to build
