Pavilion roof Mk2

A few entries back I showed a 'completed' pavilion. But on returning to the viaduct for another recce a month or so ago, we found that the roof construction was somewhat different :banghead: so it was back to the workbench for another go.

The objective this time was to come up with something like this:

So here is a photo sequence of how I did it:

1) Build basic subframe (2 x 2mm Evergreen section)

2) Attach 'under-roof' using 0.5mm plasticard - in black so you can see what you're doing more easily in the later stages

3) Then with 0.5mm white plasticard build up the overlapping layers, starting with the longer sides

With the shorter sides it was a case of measure > cut oversize > offer > trim > offer again > fix (sometimes with a bit of > throw away and start again) but it was still difficult to get the joins completely straight and flush, so

4) Finally, I added 0.5mm Evergreen section along the corners to make it look neater

And then with the main structure again

The roof took a few hours altogether, including thinking time, and I'm planning now to use this as a master for resin casting rather than making another seven 'identical' ones.

Nicely done. Will you trim back the microstrip before casting - I can't see ridges on the original (might be my eyes?)

You're right Jon, there are no ridges on the original - I thought the model ridges were preferable to an uneven join.

TBH I hadn't thought about trimming the microstrip flush (or flusher anyway). I'll give it some thought and see if I can pluck up courage to go at them!

perhaps wait until the resin is cast and sand and file those to remove the ridges? Just a thought that the resin will stand up better to trimming than fine strip glued on?

I like that, Ian - seems safer than trimming the strip on the 'master', even if there will be 8 of them to do.

Hi Rod,

As Ian has suggested leave the roof as it is until it is cast and then smooth back after they've been cast.

If you do it prior you're more than likely to create gaps between the fine joints which lead to the mold material will seeping into the gaps and creating an unusable mold.

The better alternative method would have been to use filler to finish off the master.....wouldn't look as nice in the attached photo right enough but would create a "finished mold"

Something maybe to bear in mind for the future

Are you cladding the pillars to create the relief detail on them ?

Keep up the Great work

Mark
