Making a point!

This evening I set myself a challenge:

I was going to try adding a decoder to the little 1F.

Unfortunately, the varnish had not quite set, but as I was in a set-challenge mode, I gave myself instead one evening to produce a turnout soldered up from PCB sleepers and easitrac rail!

The process you see here took 2.5 hours in total, and the is finished apart from adding check rails and tie bar.

The rail is soldered straight onto the sleepers ( a little untidily in places), which have been pre-cut here and there to hopefully avoid shorts when I feed current in. My conclusions after the piccies:

So what did I learn?

This turnout took less time to make than an easitrac one, is stronger and my ittle test truck rides through more smoothly.

It has been something of an eye opener, as the process was no more difficult, and in some respects easier, than using the milled bases and glued components!

Needless to say, I think I know which I will be using in future, though I would still use the easitrac plain rail, as it is brilliantly easy and simple to make!

Finally, here is the state of pay with the tank engine:

Hi Chris, the point looks great. I also prefer soldered points finding them much quicker and easier to make.

Was good to meet you at Aylesbury at the weekend although would have been nice to have a bit more time for more of a chat - always the way at shows. The picture you had of the shunting horses was a real gem.

The 1F looks very nice. I have one part built which I must get finished sometime.

regards Jerry

Nice bit of work there. Copperclad points are very good easier to tweak and strong. Although they don't look as good close up, once painted and ballasted they can look the part especially as its the trains that your eye follows. That little 1F would be getting all the attention and deservedly so.

Hi Jerry, yes it was good to exchange a few words on Sunday, and to see Highbury close up - even if there were diesels running!

I like that little Johnson 0-6-0 of yours, its a superb bit of modelling.

.

Yes the copperclad points are not technically as neat as the easitrac with the chairs and all. but reliability has to be the no1 factor for me.
