Round the bend?

Had a couple of hours spare today so used the same process as yesterday to try a curved point, using a Templot printout as a basis. Using Pritstick to secure the sleepers to the paper template works a treat, and makes it very easy to remove the point once constructed:

This was a bit more experimental since I used the 1:7 jigs still to produce most of the crossing, only adjusting it to the template when soldering it on. The rest I Made up as I went along.

I am suitably encouraged to try a Y point next - though think I would put the idea of a slip on the back ring for a while..!

Picked up a copy of MRJ 207 today - it doesn't seem 2 months since I bought issue 206... I love this mag though, it always inspires in some way.

That looks neat but a bit short for a curved 1:7 point. I was thinking of writing up how you work out curved and Y (known as split leads) points for the mag. If you want some info let me know.

I think the angle I took the photo at has foreshortened it? The Curved point was built on a templot template and looks ok to me as it sits on my shelf. 1 in 10 might well look better though.

I think I would tend to build points in situ in future having weighed up the various options anyway.

Actually its not that neat compared to the previous straight point! I had to do a bit of reheating and adjusting to get the wagon to roll through the crossing smoothly...

Which mag would that be?

There is a formula that calculates the equivalent point if it was straight rather than curved based on the effective radius. I was intending to write a bit for the 2mm Mag. For example a normal B7 point would have a effective radius of about 886mm (my tables quote 443ft full size) and a lead of 122mm(61ft) the lead being the measurment from the tip of the blades to the nose of the crossing. If the straight road is curved to say 2m the radius of the diverging road is reduced to 613mm. This can be adjusted a little by changing the lead but not much if the crossing radius stays the same. reduce the curved road to 1m and the diverging road radius is down to 470mm. With the increased interest in making points I thought it might be useful. I should really ask Mick if he would be interested.
