Bristol Barrow Road - Roundhouse Roof Girders - another rivetting day

I've had a few days off from Barrow Road at Railex with my other layout Sheep Pasture, a Cromford & High Peak subject.

Sheep Pasture at Railex

[ See Kempenfelt photos of layout dated 2nd June - please ignore his earlier post ]

I'm now back on the job finishing the girders, both long and short, by forming all 1400 rivets in the overlays for the top and bottom of the girders.

Here are some photos taken today during completion of all the girders - trial assembly revealed the girderd to be 2mm too long

After shortening the four 18ft 6in girders the two sets were soldered together ................................

Robin,

I bet you were cursing! - No wonder the little red smiley(?) - frowny?

Anyway, the end result looks brilliant. I can see the tube locations for the pillars that you mentioned at Railex. They look to align fairly well with the holes visible in the floor, although the camera angle is deceptive. Have you checked this, yet?

Is there now a set of intermediate spans running transverse to these long, through beams?

Keep up the good work,

Dave.

You can see that the lattice has structural strength, even in its scaled down form - it is spanning a scale 200 ft with no intermediate supports!

Well done, it must be satisfying to see the end of that task approaching.

Hi Dave,

Not sure how I managed to make them 2mm overlength as I measured them on a number of occasions during the build. I fully expected them to slot into place but on first trial the walls were clearly pushed out at the top. I think it must have been the cumulative effect of the solder on the square column pieces - ie 8 layers of solder, which I didn't factor in to the equation.

The holes for the columns all line up - I double checked ;)

The next big task on the roof is to make the roof trusses - all 39 of them!!!! These will fix to the walls and rest ontop of the girders, however I first need to sort out the cast columns. These need to be shortened to fit [ they are from Alan Gibson and are too long ] and I need to drill a hole into the top to fit a brass rod for the girder to slot onto.

Cheers,

Robin

Hi Mark,

They fit well even in their unsupported state but will have additional support with four octangonal columns on each girder span - see reply to Dave above.

Glad you approve :thankyou:

I've had the problem of solder thickness come up on some of my etches and i've had to deal with it there.

Incidentally if you click on the post number in a thread you get a link to that exact post. Saves people looking at the birdy hat pictures again :(.

Robin,

All's well......, but I doubt that 8 layers of solder would add up to 2 mm, unless you left a deliberate gap. Perhaps the walls were already bowed out slightly when you measured the gap, or were moved slightly by the measurement itself? Or perhaps the square section pillar sockets are a bit bigger than you allowed for?

I'm glad you sort of ignored my silly question about trannsverse girders - simple observation of the photos should have informed me that the "A" frame pitched roof supports would sit on to the main support girders and outer walls (at the outer bays). Probably my mind isn't quite "with it" just now!

Craig has lost me a bit with his comment - I can't see any "post numbers" and what are "birdy hat pictures"?

Thanks for the information re the exact link to Paul's post - hadn't appreciated you could do this. It would have avoided all the other embarrasing photos of your birthday celebrations on the page :biggrin_mini2:

Dave - I could have clicked on the number at the top right of Paul's posting to give a direct link to the Sheep Pasture, Railex photos rather than all of page 8 which includes photos of Craig's birthday escapades - including the wearing of a 'birdy hat':smile_mini2:

Looking as impressive as ever Robin. Glad to see Paul played his part properly in young Craig's birthday celebrations!
