More stool stuff

Hello.

After finding out and purchasing some 0.4mm square Nickel Silver wire from MSE at Railex a short while ago I have been itching to rethink how to represent the point rodding on Highclere and as I would like to get the point rodding in place before I (re)ballast the layout I made an effort tonight to knock together another jig to help solder the point rodding stools onto the wire...

The photos above show my results. Now I know the wire is a little overscale for 2mm (it works out at just over 2 inches) plus they are strictly not GWR stools but hey, I think it looks alright so far plus not many 2mm layouts have point rodding! The only problem is I have quite a bit to make so I need to stay focused!

They look great Missy. If someone tells you that the wire is oversize you should be telling them where they can stick it.

Hi Kris.

Thanks but as you know, the great unwashed can be a little critical sometimes! If I listened to them the layout would have been in a skip ages ago!

Just ask them what they used for the rodding on their layout, that normally shuts that kind of numpty up ;)

LOL.

That looks really nice- I am watching the development of your rodding, its something I want on Kingsbridge too.

I think you need to stay focused just to see it. Really neat work I can't remember see point rodding in 2mm before. You just keep raising the bar. We will all have to raise our standards.

They are LSWR stools (I'm not guessing from the photo, I have some that I will never build). You should have convinced Ivan to do the GWR ones, since he has both in his range.

Hi Rich

The ones you were going to send me by any chance?

Seriously though is anyone really going to be that pedantic when they can hardly see the things!?!

I could say that as the line was served by the SR, as well as the GW and the station is on the southern section of the line...

Hi Missy,

Please forgive me for asking this, but is there a special reason why you want to use square wire?

From the info that I have, GW point rodding was round (see for instance: http://www.wsr.org.uk/bajune2003.htm) which means you could make it to scale.

Yes, maybe (that's why I was going to give mine) and no.

I was sure it was both, with a change from round to square. I don't remember the date.

Hmmmm.

That leaves me with a problem then. Do I stop working on these (which were a freebie and try to persuade him to etch some get ones (at a cost) and then wait for them to get etched and posted to me?

Hi Missy,

I can't believe that people are commenting that the stools you have used are the wrong type - these things are less a millimetre high!! I thought 2mm finescale modelling was about creating an impression, not getting bogged down in minute detail.

I remember going to a talk by Steve Hall (P4 modeller) where he demonstrated the working point rodding on his 'Halifax King Cross' layout - fantastic, but probably not a realistic option in 2mm scale!

Now that is cool.

Actually, technically speaking she is the one who broguht it up.

2mm FS modelling is about whatever you want it to be. Imüpession making, or fine detail, that's up to you.

But if its no extar effort to get it right, then why not do it.

I have blobs of solder for rail chairs on my layout! The trackplan isnt correct for the period I am modelling, and the signals are incorrect too (there werent any in the 50's) I took the stools I had soldered to the wire to the MRC tonight and to quote someone there "the only reason I know they are there is because one shiny bit is different from the other" and that was him looking closely at them! Seriously I think the fact the stools are LSWR types instead of GW ones is the least of my worries right now!

Considering they didnt cost me anything and they are sat on my workbench then I would say that is the best option unless of course someone is offering to draw, etch, and send me some really quickly, any offers?

Missy

This reminds me of the issue about signals - which is the bigger error a wrongly placed / wrong type of signal or no signal at all. I say go with the etches you have. You can only see the difference between the LWSR and GWR types with your nose in the ballast or in photos whereas using what you have would be visible to those viewing the layout and increase the realism. If as I suspect the result is worth while more etches may well follow. Alternatively you may decide the end result does not justify the effort ( I can't actually see you taking that view Missy).

Thank you Don.

That was my exact plan. I think it is so easy to get bogged down with the details and you end up never doing anything. I am just as guilty of this as anyone else. If I am not happy with the point rodding then no doubt I will throw it all away and start again with the right bits but to be honest I cannot see myself doing that as its already been mentioned, they are so small you wouldnt realise they were the wrong type unless of course you read my blog!

Agreed. I am guilty.

How quickly? It's the next thing I need to do on Littlemore. I don't mind being distracted again.
