Pen Y Bont Extension (Part 1)

Those that are good at carpentry look away NOW!

I've just spent a few days "wood butchering" the new baseboard for the long delayed extension to pen Y Bont.

setting the layout up has to wait for decent weather as It's too big with the extension to erect indoors!

Anyway here it is! the long awaited extension in place but, about 2years from finishing!

Looking towards the fiddle yard, track and turnouts just placed on the board for checking the "fit"

A little closer to the fiddle yard end and you can see the approximate position of the engine shed and coal stage.

Looking the other way towards the terminus, the cut out for the river under the railway near to the main board has yet to be done.

And finally a closer look at the position of the engine shed and coal stage looking towards the terminus again.

That's it for now. Please don't expect rapid progress on this extension, It's took me 2 years to get this far!

Cheers

Looking good Frank, should make a nice versatile layout when finished. Good thing is that you can still use the smaller version whilst building the extension.

Good to see you've got your modelling mojo back Frank, looking forward to see how this is blended in to the existing layout.

Adding length to a layout visually gives it so much more presence. I'm sure the additional board will make operating it more interesting too.

I very much like the way this is panning out Frank, but didn't the original plan have the shed facing the other way with the doors facing the bridge so that any locos had to draw past the point and then set back into the shed ?

One of the things which makes the layout stand out is your lovely buildings and the shed is another fine example. Nothing beats a good scratch built structure for creating atmosphere.

Hi Geoff, thanks for the comment.

I don't ever remember saying that the shed would be the other way round.

I am trying to stick closely to the arrangement that existed at Aberaeron and the way I have laid the track out is the way it was. There was another siding on the shed side of the river facing the bridge, but, this was a cattle dock. later to become the siding for camping coaches.

talk again soon, Cheers
