Trefallion - Locos : 517

Well, my Models & Leisure 517 tank engine is now very nearly complete. Just a copper capped chimney to paint, a bunker of coal to add, a complicated bit of lining to do on the cab sides, a couple of whistles and a protective coat of satin varnish and of course a crew to drive it.

The chassis is scratch built, the original M&L one was originally put together in my 'OO' days, before I decided to move over to the dark side

The wheels are Alan Gibson P4 ones, and the ouside bearings on the trailing wheels were sourced from my spares box (the M&L kit was for inside bearings only. The brass dome and safety valve covers were also Alan Gibson items I think. The socket type lamp holders were home made from brass square section, with a small hole drilled to hold the spigot on the lamp case (I have yet to make the lamps).

The body has been sprayed in Precision Paints GWR Pre 1928 green (an old tin from the 1990's that still has good contents - in fact all of the paints I bought years ago still seem in good condition). The Indian Red (again Precision Paints) was brushed on the chassis and on the parts of the body that needed it. The black portions were brush painted in Humbrol Matt Black. The lining is Pressfix, and had to be applied in sections as none of the elements on the sheet were the correct size or shape for the model.

A couple of pictures show the progress to date, and I am really happy with the running of the model.

Hi ian, I only just found this entry now. The 517 looks great, and I really like the look of the outside bearings on the rear wheels. Never understood why M&L didn't include that in the kit, as I believe most of the class had those.

On the subject of polished domes, would you happen to know if Alan Gibson still supplies them in this condition? I only seem to be able to find them either in w/m or in unpolished brass from other suppliers.

Mikkel,

I don't know where I got the dome or safety valve from (I bought them at about the time I got the 517 - probably mid '80s), the M&L kit was solely whitemetal. I did polish up both fittings myself by mounting them in my mini drill and taking some fine wet & dry paper to them as both were a little coarse as bought (I think there is still evidence of this in the photographs as you can still see some surface pitting).

Sorry this didn't help much.

Thanks Ian, I have now asked them at Alan Gibson, and their domes are not polished either. I might consider your approach though, just need to get a good mini drill first.

Mikkel,

I think any electric drill would do - the dome and safety valve I used had a cast spigot at the bottom which obviously was mounted in the chuck. I have a hollow dome from somewhere that will eventually go on my Mallard Models Duke 4-4-0, polishing that might me a little more challenging :-)

Just found this blog after following the link from your post on 'Blog Quality' that I saw in VNC. I don't think you need worry about quality or content, mate, from what I've seen here I'd say you're right in the mix with precisely what the blog section was intended for. Good to have you back in the hobby, and keep sharing. Great stuff!
