RT Models Ruston 48DS Chassis Test Etch

A package arrived in the post a couple of weeks ago from Robert of RT Models containing the test etch for a simple chassis designed to power a Ruston 48DS, either the popular A1Models kit or the rarer Impetus kit.

Its designed to be very simple to build and to use a High Level Slimliner+ gearbox with a Mashima motor.

Here's the nickel silver etch;

And folded up;

The drive is to one axle only, the other features simple compensation, the axle pivoting on the 'V' and running in etched slots;

Here it is with the gearbox in place, fitted with a Mashima 1020 just to see how it looks, note that the 'spare' motor shaft will need cutting down;

I swapped the 1020 for a 1015 so I could use a flywheel (using a flywheel meant that I could only use the body mounting hole at the gearbox end), here's the chassis built up with the (laminated and rather nice) brakes fitted;

With the (detailed) body in place;

The chassis is extremely simple to build so hopefully will appeal to novices. It needs a couple of tweaks which Robert will sort out, after all this is only a test etch. Mine is built to EM, washers are needed for the wider gauges. The only body modification is to enlarge the cut-out in the footplate to clear your chosen motor.

It needs a lot of weight, for that reason I have the driven axle at the rear so the cab can be filled with lead (this one isn't weighted yet as I've run out of lead).

The advantage of this chassis over a Spud or Gandy Dancer (which is what the A1 kit was designed around) is the correct wheelbase, daylight under the frames, brakes and lower gearing. And of course the satisfaction of building your own chassis!

I was wondering how to motorise the A1 48DS I've got stored away (without using a Spud that does 0-60 in 0.5 seconds). <div><br></div><div>Now I think have the answer..... </div>

I'm building an N gauge one for a friend, and ive done the body, but have no chassis for it, this is now making me think a OO version for me would be a good idea!<div><br></div><div>J</div>

Richard - everything seems small compared to Gauge 3!

Pete - I bet that there's loads of unbuilt A1 kits knocking about, I'd like to think that a simple chassis kit like this will see a few more being built.

Jaymz - ideal for a small quay!

That thought had ocurred to me! Although I think it'd need a runner much like an 03 to be allowed on the national network! Having said that, a couple of Sentinels did appear at the Goathland show, so don't count it out!

Looking forward to seeing more of this

Hi halfwit,

Interesting... nice and simple.... well done RT! It's even simpler than the Impetus version - and as I made a complete cods of mine trying to get it into 4WD and as I was just about to cut one out of PCB - I'll be keeping an eagle eye out.

Hurry up and QA it, can you? :rolleyes:

Cheers

Jaymz, you could use the excuse that the quay is privately owned and BR only come on it to shunt...

Jan, I've been looking at my Impetus 48DS today (the etches are still wrapped in the paper!). This chassis might give me a good excuse to build the thing! Or I could e-bay it to pay for my next holiday...

I'm glad some of you are happy with it, thank Paul for it being produced. :drinks:

I will try to get the final drawing sent off either this or next week with some other bits as i want it ready for scaleforum.

I must get mine built as well!

Ah.... I'll have to wait for the website to stock it then.... RailWells is my only outing this year....

Good Luck with it.

An A1 kit has just arrived and the RT kit is much needed, congratulations to all for such a clever design.
