A package arrived in the post a couple of weeks ago from Robert of RT Models containing the test etch for a simple chassis designed to power a Ruston 48DS, either the popular A1Models kit or the rarer Impetus kit.
Its designed to be very simple to build and to use a High Level Slimliner+ gearbox with a Mashima motor.
Here's the nickel silver etch;
And folded up;
The drive is to one axle only, the other features simple compensation, the axle pivoting on the 'V' and running in etched slots;
Here it is with the gearbox in place, fitted with a Mashima 1020 just to see how it looks, note that the 'spare' motor shaft will need cutting down;
I swapped the 1020 for a 1015 so I could use a flywheel (using a flywheel meant that I could only use the body mounting hole at the gearbox end), here's the chassis built up with the (laminated and rather nice) brakes fitted;
With the (detailed) body in place;
The chassis is extremely simple to build so hopefully will appeal to novices. It needs a couple of tweaks which Robert will sort out, after all this is only a test etch. Mine is built to EM, washers are needed for the wider gauges. The only body modification is to enlarge the cut-out in the footplate to clear your chosen motor.
It needs a lot of weight, for that reason I have the driven axle at the rear so the cab can be filled with lead (this one isn't weighted yet as I've run out of lead).
The advantage of this chassis over a Spud or Gandy Dancer (which is what the A1 kit was designed around) is the correct wheelbase, daylight under the frames, brakes and lower gearing. And of course the satisfaction of building your own chassis!
Paul.
