Empire Basin - Banner repeater - Eek these things are small!

The internet is a great tool for research for this hobby of ours. Following inquiries on the Scalefour forum I was pointed at some drawings of banner repeater signals. I found few pictures on 'Adrian the Rocks' signalling web page http://www.roscalen....gnals/index.htm and following a quick email Adrian sent me a couple of pictures showing the rear of the banner signal without having to resort to Eileen's extreme products.

At just under 11mm in diameter the result isn't big and has caused a fair bit of 'entertainment' in the burnt finger department. The head will be mounted on top of a suitable post and will probably have ladders up both the front and the rear as per the photographs.

The fingers will heal up soon!

Blimey, that does look fiddly. End result looks good though. What's the origin of the repeater? Is it a kit?

Nope, not a kit, just lots of bits of scrap etch and few millimeters of K&S brass tube. Mind you it would be nice is someone did a lost wax casting for the head or perhaps it lends itself to 3D printing.

That's very impressive. There is actually a kit available from MSE though up until now, I've been puzzling how to make it work. I assume the wire is acting on a pivot somewhere?

There is a pivot pin on the back of the casing and the rotating arm has a short length of tube which goes over the pin. Attached to the rear of the arm is an L shaped bit of brass with a hole in it. The rod which looks like the arm support is actually two pieces, the top bit is just cosmetic but the bottom bit is cranked around the pivot point and pokes through the little bit of L shape brass. You can probably make out the crank on the wire on the horizontal shot about, you can also see the marks of the solder where the little bit of brass is soldered on to the arm.

Hope that makes sense. I'll try and post a diagram if it isn't.

I haven't any experience of the MSE version, but if it follows the example of some of their ground disks it is probably perfect for S scale (by which I mean some of them are a little over scale IMHO)

Thanks David. I know what you mean about the ground signals - we're overdue some better (preferably etched) versions - but the banner scales out pretty well against drawings (courtesy of the LMS Journal) and your solution answers the question quite nicely. Typically, I've come to the conclusion that we don't actually need a banner... Still, I'll bear that in mind for when I do need one.
