Par Station in N gauge

cornish trains jez

Good morning,

I have been meaning to post something about my layout for quite sometime now.

Just a bit of background, I have been modelling the swiss scene for many years and have decided to model china clay operations in Cornwall for my latest project. Par was chosen as a prototype as I have never modelled a prototype location before. A visit to Par was tied in with a holiday in Cornwall during July 2010 and many pictures were taken. The great thing with this particular station is that most of the buildings have not changed in years so making my life easier in building it.

My initial plans were to model the station with a period spanning the late 90's to the present day. However after carrying out extensive research on the location, i have decided to model the 80's as this would provide the widest range of traction and rolling stock.

Believe it or not, I started building this layout a year ago and have only built the baseboards and laid the track. A house move later and I have finally finished the wiring which makes the layout DCC ready as I have recently purchased the gaugemaster prodigy advance system.

It is a continuous run layout with an 8 road storage yard to the rear spanned over three baseboards built from ply wood.

The only alteration I have to make is to replace the concrete sleepered track with wooden sleepers as my chosen period for the model has changed in the last 6 months to the 1980's.

I used google earth to make all the platform measurements (I actually measured the width of these whilst down at Par) and where to install the points. I'll also use this to get rough measurements for the buildings and where to position these.

Here are a couple of photos with the layout's progress to date.

Any comments kindly appreciated.

A good start Jeremy

You should be able to run some nice prototypical length trains with that...I am guessing a Dapol HST being one of them?

Keep going and keep us all informed on progress....

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your comment. I've got my Dapol blue/grey HST and 5 coaches so far, just need Dapol to release their buffet car!!

I've got 3 blue liveried class 37's and I've been running a 37 with 7 Mk2 air cons + 1 MK1 BSK, looks great. Haven't DCC'd my class 50 yet but I'll get round to it soon.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Par station is 190yds long according to the Sectional Appendix - I trust Google Earth confirms this :D

Sounds good...how about a BG on that Mk II rake rather than the BSK? I think the revised tooling on those must be due soon from Bachfar.

You'll be needing a long rake of clay hoods too if set in the 80's... :)

Hi Pete,

I'm looking forward to the release of the re-tooled BG and hopefully the GUV's won't be too far behind as I have some great pictures of some authentic rakes which I would like to reproduce on the layout. I have 3 clay hoods so far from the N Gauge Society but they are still to be built. I do have 32 CDA's however for those late 80's china clay workings!

Best regards,

Jeremy

:O :o wow...that's gonna be an impressive train.

I can think of a few peeps on here who will be frothing at the thought of that!...

Hi Pete,

I will try and get a picture of this train to add to this blog. Did the class 37's run with 30+ CDA's as pictures and videos that I have found show 15-20 wagon length trains?

Still, you are right, a nice long rake of these would look great!

Best regards,

Jeremy

I don't think that 37s did have 32 on......I thought 32 was the maximum length (til EWS tried 36!)

I thought it was more like 24 with a class 37, and I used to lie in bed and hear 'em grinding their way up from Middleway - just never counted em!

Someone will know for sure on here though :)

Hi Mickey,

Thanks for that. I will test run my 37 with 24 CDA's and post a picture on my blog. You are right about EWS, when I was down in Cornwall in 2010, I counted 32 riding behind 66093.

Best regards,

Jeremy
