"Model Rail's ECML Masterplan: Some thoughts"

Oh dear - another crazy idea to throw into the melting pot!

I have been absolutely hooked on pages 44 and 45 of Model Rail no.170 this month. The possibilities of Richard Foster's 14ft by 12ft trackplan have had me measuring up rooms and feverishly sketching out ideas.

In terms of my "pathfinder" layout, splitting an overall bigger layout into four manageable chunks, to build over a few years is ideal for me, rather than building it up all in one. The thing which strikes me about the masterplan is the potential for keeping, say, King's Cross, but basing it on the London-Leeds route instead, which would suit me down to the ground.

So instead, King's Cross - the approach to Potter's Bar (from the Leeds end) including the tunnel - then Copley Hill in place of Doncaster, and finally Leeds Central instead of Waverly.

The great thing about the Llandudno trackplan that Richard Foster based his version of Doncaster on, is that I can effectively use the carriage works of Copley Hill as the scenic backdrop, in much the same way he has envisioned using Doncaster works.

With modifications to the overall trackplan, and taking into account what I want to do in terms of tracklaying, this could be an ideal semi-modular layout to build over a few years, for the Pacifics to eventually get to stretch their legs good and proper.

Thoughts and criticisms welcomed.

Sounds quite good.

Have you ever been to the Gainsborough Model Railway Society's layout?

An "O" gauge version of the above, VERY interesting.

Has potential for good running and storage, which if you are like me and need at least 10 sidings for trains. Though the track would have to be streamline, not setrack.

Gainsborough MRS is what I was thinking of too. I visited last April (2011) all the way from OZ. Very enjoyable.

Must visit Gainsborough and observe it seems. I definitely want some storage, though it occurred to me I could have good fun by adapting the layout further and making it potentially a roundy-round, with a line completely bypassing King's Cross from Leeds Central and coming back out at the Potter's bar section. So much potential in Richard Foster's idea frankly.

One further thought I have had - a right mad one if ever you heard it! If I split the overall layout into four sections, I could in theory do each section as a different season of the year.

So King's Cross could be Spring, Potter's Bar could be Summer, Copley Hill could be in Autumn, with appropriate Autumnal Colours, and Leeds Central could be in Winter, with snow.

This could showcase a very different railway scene whilst keeping the same rolling stock moving. What fun!
