My Coal Staithes Smell of Coffee ....

Having a small son has it's advantages sometimes. I mentioned that I needed a few coffee stirrers for an idea I had about a free set of coal staithes. A couple of days later he presented me with a good handful that he had "collected" on his last trip to a well known fast food joint.

So, here's my McStaithes

A coat of weathered wood and then some dirtying down should do the trick 🙂

They look good ! I always wonder what the actual dimensions a coal staithe of this size is ? There seems to be a lot of different methods in construction, from horizontal timbers (as yours) to verticle sleeper style, with step down ends on the road/yard side. I guess it comes down to poetic licence !! No matter how many layouts I look at, there are many variations of these simple structures.

What (in scale feet) are the 1. height of bays, 2. width of th bays & 3. the overal length ??

Cheers, Gary.

I'm sorry to say that I'm going to have to steal your idea! I promise not to pass it off as my own. They really look the bees knees.

Oh this is superb! I shall have to steal this idea too.. Now, where's the nearest McCoffee stirrer emporium?...

Hi, very interested in this as I have thought of using stirrers as material. How do the start he’s look now? Did you ever finish them off?

Pretty well, front and centre in this pic taken for the BRM article 🙂

Real coal and lots of dirty black wash made with old used up black acrylic paint, water and a drop of washing up liquid
