Get outside, it's a lovely day...

nevard_110422_brewhouseQ_IMG_9812_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Before I take advantage of the nice weather outside (probably doing dull things like gardening which I hate; Astroturf and plastic shrubs would be ideal - actually full sized static grass would get my vote too), here's another quick snap of the overgrown rails on the wharf after a zap of the Grasmaster. The lightly laid (code 55 flatbottomed) section here being inlaid in ash and clinker between the cobbles, so af

Sabotaged & Defeated!

Dirty Minky

nevard_110719_MinkD_DSC_2976, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Extract from my blog at www.nevardmedia.blogspot.com     From a Parkside Dundas kit; a GWR Mink D used for stores and local movements around Bath seen here on Brewhouse Quay being pulled along the wharf road with a tractor. The driver has probably gone for a jar by the way...   Rather than go for 1950's carmine which was rather pushing history, I decided to turn it into the local stores runabout in grey (Halfords prim

The 6.05 pm Service from Evercreech

nevard_110206_catcott_DSC_1324_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   BR Std Class 3 MT No. 82005 slows for Catcott Burtle with an early evening service from Evercreech Junction during the late summer of 1964.The layout lights were turned off and the natural north facing window light was allowed to stray in. Clunk. The only addition is the fake engine-clag and some git leaning out of the engine. The Morris traveller has been sprayed with a little matt varnish to kill the toy like shine.

Old Postcard

nevard_110404_brewhouseQ_IMG_9582_BW_postcard, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   I was shifting through an Ebay purchase of some 10x8 black and white prints recently, and found this shot taken on the real Brewhouse Quay (it's on the Kennet and Avon on the edge Bath by the way). I gather the photo was taken in 1949 by all accounts.   As you can see, it's a very tidy place with little in the way of much going on. Still, 1949 was very much like the present time with everything run dow

Kits of the Sixties!

nevard_110909_BQ_IMG_1203_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Upon my return to the hobby a decade of so ago, a very kind gent sold me around 50 kit-built wagons and half a dozen Maunsell and Bulleid passenger carriages for the price of a round of drinks. As required, I've been slowly refurbishing selected items to bring them a little closer to current standards.   Behind Radstock (with oversize buffers from Gibsons to avoid buffer lock on sharp wharf curves) we have a rake of kit-buil

Getting there...

nevard_110412_brewhouseQ_IMG_9689_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Brewhouse Quay: A overall view taken under natural daylight, but Photoshopped to hide my patio and unpainted timber. In due course the diorama/layout shell will be painted black, so the effect in a dark room shouldn't be too different. That is the only computer manipulation - the actual layout is 'as is'.   I am still undecided what to place on the extreme right, but it's likely to be another building. I was

An angle of BQ you won't normally see

nevard_110821_BQ_IMG_0923_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Here's an angle you won't normally be able to see unless you peer over the end of Brewhouse Quay behind the lighting rig. From this angle, the track layout can be observed to full effect including the wagon turntable which links to a siding that runs out right through the backscene to the other side to allow a little fun swapping wagons around.   Very shortly, the line in the centre foreground will be extended towards the pho

Something for the Weekend

111002_cornish_int_IMG_1420_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Cornish Interlude (working title) update   What better that to move the workbench outside when the weather is as good as it has been! No need to hoover up after either!   This weekend saw the repaint and weather of a Bachmann Scenecraft GWR 'Pagoda'. The weekend also saw the construction of a short platform from foam board, embossed plastic card and Das modelling clay. Note the faded BR Southern Region colours, this to di

Thanks!

nevard_110918_MRL_DSC_3766_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Thank you to all who popped by to say "Hi" at Model Rail Live over the weekend at Barrow Hill Round House whilst exhibiting Brewhouse Quay for it's inaugural outing. I've never been to a show quite like this with indoor and out door exhibits. This made an unusual mix to appeal to fans of all railways whether miniature or full sized. It also made a great day out for families with the addition of train rides and even face painti

Green Planet

nevard_110522_planet_DSC_2188_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   The Roxey Mouldings Planet 0-4-0 Diesel has now been painted and is ready for weathering and glazing. There is plenty of scope really to go to town with rust spots and patched up paintwork. The nameplate from Narrow Planet is possibly a little large, but there again it's a very small loco. My excuse is that it is second hand!   Named 'Fleur', here it is parked on the canal edge at Brewhouse Quay.   Click here for a

Steam on Cement Quay?

nevard_101128_cementQ_IMG_8463_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   2-8-0 superpower as 48660 pulls a rakes of steel 16 ton mineral wagons away from the loading screen on the wharf at Cement Quay.   Some industrial locations can suit multiple eras with just a few changes. In this shot the scene is wound back to the mid 1960's and the last days of steam on the Western Region. The 8F and the 16 ton mineral wagons look completely at home, to the extent that next time I take Cement Qua

New view and a little digression....

nevard_110831_BQ_IMG_1073_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Here's a view of Brewhouse Quay which has only been possible for a day or two since the exit to the extra fiddle yard was created. A short telephoto effect makes an interesting slightly compressed view showing off the lightweight track and various ground textures between the rails and around the yard. As soon as one views 90 degrees to the light source, all sorts of interesting things start to happen texture-wise - the lighting

Duffers day out!

Yesterday a few of us nutcases met up for a jolly tracking down full sized trains with cameras in the north Oxfordshire/Warwickshire area. Without rambling on too much about what a nice day we had hanging about on station platforms and railway bridges - here are the results. Oh yes, and we also bumped into fellow blogger Phil Parker. To the PHOTOS You might like to check out what fellow photographers Chris Perkins and Tony Callaghan captured on their cameras too.

Obviously this wagon is not yet finished should anyone ask, the roof needs painting grey, the underframe black, then numbering, couplings and the all important weathering.   Parkside Dundas kits are mostly a joy to assemble, with little flash and carving required to get them to fit toge

Trams and Beer

nevard_101226_munich-tram_IMG_8832_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia. For a change we decided to escape the Christmas mayhem and head to Munich for a few days, not really for any cultural experience but unashamedly to sup a few beers in the various beer halls all over this beautiful city. And anyway, most things are shut over the Christmas period and let's face it, it's way too cold to do much else so I don't feel the slightest bit guilty in this respect!   Of course one needs

A Right Old Carry On

nevard_110410_brewhouseQ_IMG_9665_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Brewhouse Quay: There is still much to do with the layout still evolving, and this is an example of spur of the moment model making.   The gate ‘to the rest of the world’ seen here in its embryonic stage, is the result of seeing just such a gate in the movie 'Carry On at Your Convenience' and thinking out loud "that's just what I need". Being able to ‘pause’ live video on a Sky + box allowed me to mak

They are a test product from Pete Harvey Designs www.phd-design.co.uk/ of this 'ere parish. Normally one would simply solder the rail to the sleeper top, then have to cut in half the C+L plastic chairs and glue - quite a fiddly task. All that's needed here will be a good splos

Summer Saturday Over Mendip!

nevard_110109_pines_DSC_20926_BW_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Acclaimed West Country snapper Ivan Locksmith with his Rollieflex and a roll Kodak Tri-X captured this photo of the Cleethorpes to Exeter pounding up the Mendip slopes near Masbury ably hauled by 40564 and 53809 in August 1959. On summer Saturdays Bath shed was frequently short of motive power, so a SDJR 7F heavy freight locomotive was often rostered on to assist over the Mendips and was always marshalled on the inside

nevard_110916_BQ_IMG_1283_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   It's amazing what can be achieved if one turns off the computer for 24 hours. This wasn't really planned, but it's Model Rail Live this weekend and I had a rather long list of things to complete which didn't involve hanging around all day on toy chuff chuff forums like a bar fly to stale beer......   The first job of the day; a Leido Trackside die-cast Mechanical Horse received a load of sacks, removal of the British Railways

Grubby Green Planet

nevard_110523_planet_IMG_9983_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   This evening saw the completion of the little Roxey Mouldings 0-4-0 Planet diesel. Some old bull for Tuesday

nevard_110411_brewhouseQ_IMG_9681_postcard_web, originally uploaded by nevardmedia.   Last night another quick dig through Ian Locksmith's print collection revealed another photo of the Brewhouse Quay on the edge of Bath. Judging by the angle, this one appears to have been taken from another canal boat and from the time around 1952 when the brewery had a major rebuild to get rid of the wartime damage - the barge to the left being used as a water-born skip.   Note the wharf side cran
