GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - underframe done and body started

Made some more progress with this coach this week. Underframe has been painted and the final details added. I still need to hand paint the brake pull rods black but it's about done.     I've also made a start on the body, going pretty well, all is square and fitting together quite easily     Should have painted those seats before gluing them in though ...... Oh well, I'll know better with the all 3rd S9, more seats in that one too   So once those seats are painted and maybe some sig

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Transfers

So, the little coach has made another step towards completion. All the HMRS transfers have been applied and the end strapping has been painted black.       Some pipework to attend to, all the brasswork (handles etc) to add then it should be ready for varnish

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Nearly ready for paint

A few productive evenings has the coach up to the point of paint (nearly!)   just got the gas control gear to add to the non-step end and that's about it until it's painted. I hope to get to the Derby Show to pick up some paint, so progress will halt at this point for a few weeks. I'd better get on with the layout       I've added the luggage racks but as yet have not raided my wife's wardrobe for some "mesh" as alluded to in the instructions! Some cheap seated figures are on their wa

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Done (nearly)

So this build has come to an end (almost) I must say I've enjoyed this trip into GWR land, something I don't normally do. First time with a Bob Moore lining pen too. Anyway, jobs left to do are blacken the buffers and fit them properly and fit some 3-links.               So, that's it until the next one - an All Third to match, need to order seating from Slaters before I start that one though. Camping Coach next methinks ......

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Details, details

Here I go again, dragging a build out with details that hardly anyone will notice, especially when the roof is on!   First glazing bars on the luggage compartment doors. I started with some 0.5mm microstrip, taped it to the bench at 2mm intervals then slid some paper underneath and marked out the horizontals. These were laid and then the area flooded with Plastic Magic.     Once hard, a scalpel blade was slipped underneath to seperate from the paper. After a quick coat of matt black and t

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - brown out

Well, in between the showers I got the brown paint on - thanks to Brian at Shawplan for letting me pop round on Friday and pick up some stocks. Why is is I always spend at least an hour chatting???   anyway here's a pic     Next is to see if I can paint the black raised areas then flood the cream in the recesses, but that's not until the brown is well and truly dry.   Sorry Moz, I used grey primer ......

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Almost ready for varnish

So,   the lining is almost done, still got some tidying up to do, mainly just some re-lining where touching up has run into the ocre. I've also got the end strapping to paint.     Despite the condition of the coach, no roof let alone windows and a strong smell of paint - some passengers have already taken up residence too!

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - 1st side ready for lining

So, the time is almost upon me when I tackle the Bob Moore lining pen!   The first side is painted out, but I won't be putting the pen to this until I've practiced on the as yet untouched sides for the all 3rd       There's still a few bits that need touching up, but I'm hoping the lining will cover most if not all of them, we shall see. The other side is still masked out waiting for the window frames to be painted.   I've also repainted some of the cheapie eBay seated figures ready

Got a bit distracted ....

Got home from work yesterday and a package was waiting from Comet (thanks Geoff!)   So I kinda forgot about doing more connecting rods and waded into putting the DE38 drive extender together for the gearbox.   Here is is in all it's glory attached to the GB5 and Sagami motor.     I took Comet's advice and have not used the grub screws on either of the gears fitted to layshafts. a spot of superglue holds the layshafts in place and the gears are free to rotate on the shafts. This does see

Golden Arrow Crosti - Tender Part 2

Quick photo following fitting of handrails and a quick coat of Carplan grey primer, looks quite nice 😁     note top of drive unit poking through the hole in the coal space. The shell is not quite sitting down as well as it should, need to take a wee bit more off the top of the tender weight then it will be fine.   Will start fettling the loco body over the weekend, first issue is that the casting has the blower duct/tunnel on the left hand side of the boiler that was

Golden Arrow Crosti - Tender Part 1

I'm currently doing a Crosti 9F for someone and thought it would be good to blog the build. It's my first go with a resin kit too.   Firstly thanks to Chris at Golden Arrow for his persitance getting a kit to me through the Royal Mail, hope you can use the second kit sent (received broken - thanks postie!) somehow ....   I thought I'd start with the tender to easy myself in. Castings cleaned up easily, one or two air bubbles to fill with Humbrol Model Filler but nothing too o

Golden Arrow Crosti - Ready for Christmas

As promised, here's a few photos of the Crosti posing on Summat Colliery ready for delivery to it's new owner in time for Christmas. It is intended that Roomey of this parish will weather it in the new year.

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Preheater and Handrails

My attention turned to the pre-heater today, so the chassis was stripped down to release the Hornby underboiler/motion support and the resin parts trimmed up and superglued on. After a quick test assembly to make sure everything was in the right place the joins were re-inforced on the insides with epoxy resin glue.     After leaving the epoxy to set, a final fettle was needed to ensure a good fit with the chassis block and job done (apart from painting).   Note also from the photo the sec

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Pipework 1

On a roll today, got busy with some copper wire (reclaimed from some figure of eight "bell wire") and started the pipework on the left firebox side.     For those not familiar with the Crosti variant the two pipes running to the footplate from the valve on the side of the firebox run down to the "blower" that is mounted on the preheater boiler below the footplate.   Must find some thick wire to do the reverser shaft ......

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco More Pipework

More pipework and handrails today. I'm still waiting for some guitar strings to do the main boiler feed pipes. These need to be done before handrails and the smoke deflector can't be fitted before the handrail ....     Fitted the blastpipe etc to the underside of the side chimney though - starting to look like a Crosti now

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco in Photographic Grey

Had time for a quick dusting with grey primer, sorry Chris, they really show up the porosity in places. It really does not look this bad to the naked eye         looks like more fettling is needed before the black goes on but that's why we do the grey primer thing, it not only keys the top coat but it's great for showing those minor little imperfections.

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Even More Pipework

More pipework, a part of a build that I actually really enjoy and always end up doing more detail than I intended at the start. So here's the steam pipes to injectors with the control valves made out of fine wire and some old electical insulation. Note new Hornby pipework below the cab.     I've also fitted the safety valves from the donor bodyshell and some nice Bachmann sprung buffers. The reverser rod is some mains wiring cable I found lying around that was the right diameter.     T

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Drive

So,   I've started making my second Golden Arrow Crosti 9F, this time this one's for me - a loco drive version using the latest Hornby Railroad 9F chassis. The intention is to sell off my existing tender drive version that although having given stirling service on Summat Colliery since day one, is, after all, tender drive.   To complicate matters the Railroad tender chassis will not do as it's too long at the front and lacking in the details that the current Britannia tender has. Although I

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Body Fettling

I've set the tender aside for now, fall plate might need adjusting once connected to the loco, but that is to come ...   Bodyshell was fettled and filed, this took much longer than the tender, but then it is a much more complicated casting. It cleans up really easily and what initially looks like a bit of a dogs breakfast very quickly looks the business.   The blower and duct/tunnel cover was scraped off with my trusty Swann Morton #10 and smoothed off. The cab backhead etc was epoxied in pl

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Blastpipe Carving

progressing nicely with this build but thought a quick update would be in order to show you all the blastpipe/steam pipe casting that fits under the side exhaust pipe. here's a before photo just after cutting it from the sprue     and here's another after 15 mins carving with a sharp knife with a good photo of the real thing to compare with     Probably the part that needed the most work, maybe would be better in whitemetal. Note a small amount of filler where there were air bubbles.

Golden Arrow Crosti - Loco Assembly Completed

Following a trip to my local music shop I ended up with a Rotosound second bass string for the insulated pipework. I felt kinda silly as I have three fully strung basses in the wardrobe that I never even considered checking oh well.   So pipework is all done and I have also added the extra steps using Evergreen microstrip cemented in an "L" section for the undercab step and some scraps of phosphor bronze sheet for the smokebox steps.   Construction is done and following a good wash in warm

Golden Arrow Crosti - Back in Black

Whohoo! apart from shed and numberplates it's about done. Still need to add coal, take a little off the tender weight to get the body to sit right down and the power wires betwixt loco and tender need re-soldering but basically it's ready for weathering     The loco will have an extensive photoshoot before hand-over to it's owner, I'll post some here

George's Train Set - The Rebuild Part 3 - Dead Short

Well, you'd have thought I'd have spotted that there was a short circuit way before I got to wiring up the turntable - HND Electrical & Electronic Engineering pah!   Of course having the two entries to the turntable and the desk permanently live means a dead short when you align it to one or the other entry roads. Something had to be done, I thought about insulated joints etc but decided to remove the problem altogether by making the longer curved entry into a siding and removing t
