Pannier Improvements - 7723 part 3

A little more work this afternoon, Exams are now finished, so back to work tomorrow (and the long wait for the results in January!)   Today's work has focused around the cab, the new floor was added from black 40 thou and then added a bulkhead on the back of the cab. It now just needs an appropriate back head adding (something else to add to the Gibson order.)   I have also added the 10 thou firebox sides     While I had the camera out, I also got this photo of what is currently go

Pannier Improvements - 7723 part 2

Moving on from my last post, I have now made a good start on 7723   All the moulded on details have now been removed, along with all logos and numbers. The original handrails were also removed with the intention of replacing with scale handrail knobs and finer wire   Starting with the cab, the roof has had the hatch removed carefully and been replaced with a small piece of 10 thou plasticard cut to size. I have removed the glazing from cab windows, (one popped out nicely the other had lots

Pannier Improvements - 7723

Having reached the limit of work on 5813 (at least until I am able to get a small diameter drill so that I can get the handrails drilled and fitted) I have decided to crack on with another project, 7723 from a Mainline Pannier tank.   This was decided by a single undated photo of a pannier in one of the Cheddar books which did not have a BR smokebox number plate, I will also be following a similar route on a second pannier (all be it working from the more recent Bachmann body). I'm undecided o

Oil burning 4855

Inspired by @toboldlygo's  effort on “A Nod to Brent”, I have dug out my model of 4855 to get it finished off.    Previously I had cleaned up and painted the 3d printed oil tank for the tender but not done a great deal else, so the loco still needed more detail on the oil tank (pipework), renumbering, along with cab side modifications.   Renumbering was a simple job, the loco hadn’t been varnished after I previously renumbered it so the etched plates were prised off with a sc

Oh no not more wagons...

Tonight I have been trying to finish off the last few of my Christmas wagons to get them ready for paint. The aim being to get them all primed on Monday if its dry.   The last job is one I always hate to do, fitting break gear and adding suspension springs and axle boxes.   The former is only really an annoyance on wagons with seperate brakes (as per the lner 1 plank, 5 plank and van shown above) the problem being that the suspension unit sits across where the plastic was intended to go. I

Nunney Castle Renumbering the Hornby Castle

A while back I started a project to use the Hornby GWR Castles Tintagel and Wellington to convert to Berkeley and Nunney Castles.   Berkeley Castle has been covered previously, while Nunney Castle has sat waiting for me to work out how I would deal with the new design of nameplate Hornby have been using.     I started by snapping the glue connection between body and splasher, to remove the existing name plate. After slightly distressing the brass beading around the edge of the Hornby plat

More Wagons - LMS, GW and PO

Despite it looking like the hottest weekend of the year, I have been wanting to get on with some wagon building... So on the way home from work today I dropped into the model shop and came away with a Ratio LMS van, a Cambrian "Wheeler & Gregory" 4 plank PO and a Cambrian chassis kit (giving the bits to re chassis another old Bachmann model along with the missing bits for a Cambrian LMS open)   This evening I have made a start on building   first up the ratio LMS van, I want to have a

More wagons

A lot more wagon work this evening,   First up a bunch of wagons from my Cheddar valley project that have now been rewheeled for Brent, most of these were missing buffers (given that they were originally going to get sprung buffers.) I have now temporarily fitted them with fixed steel buffer heads, however the diameter is too large for most of the wagons so they will eventually need replacing with the correct size. I am seriously thinking about temporarily fitting with spare tensionlock coup

More wagon modelling

A trip to the local model shop to pick up some more plasticweld has resulted in the purchase of even more wagon kits, coming home with a Cambrian LMS 1 plank, a Ratio iron mink and a Parkside LNER van.   The Iron Mink was the first to be put together, using up my final set of w-irons. To save time I flipped the floor upside down (so I don't have to carve off all the raised bits), I then filed off the inside of the w-irons, leaving the axleboxes and springs. (thankfully the Ratio w-irons are

More wagon kits

Last night I got on with the initial stages of the next batch of wagons, All of which are now waiting for   First up a a Coopercraft Loco Coal open, and a 4 plank open. Coopercraft open wagons are a bit of a pain, given that Coopercraft have moulded the floor much too high. As a result I have corrected it by removing all of the ribs on the underside of the floor, then glued it in the correct position to the sides / ends. The solbars were then modified to remove the 2mm additional length on

More wagon building, and future projects

With the wedding, honeymoon and the initial work preparing for January's arrival (painting the nursery pink) has all rather got in the way of modelling recently. Now all is sorted I have got the drive to get on with a couple of projects (though I would much rather still be in Manutius.   First up yet another wagon kit is now ready for painting, another parkside Lowfit. Will get the paints out and finish it off tomorrow hopefully. Then need to get on with sorting out a couple of appropriate

More renunbering- Kings and Grange

The latest Modelmasters order arrived a couple of days ago, and I've finally got around to fitting them last night.   First the King, the Hornby etchings were removed from the model and prepared for the new plates by distressing the area under the printed name. The new plate was carefully cut away from its splasher and then superglued into position on the Hornby splasher. The whole assembly was then glued into place on the model, along with the cab side plates. This process was then repeated f

More on 5512's new wheels

While my fiancée is out for the evening, I've taken advantage of a nights un interrupted modelling. So after taking the dog on a very long walk to ensure she passed out, I dug out the 4575 conversion to try and finish it off.   I will come back and add some photos tomorrow, as the paint is currently drying...   Starting off with the slide bar, The original pin on which the connecting rod (please correct me if I am using the wrong terminology) is linked to the slide bar was a larger diameter

More kit built wagons

Having put the 2251 chassis to one side while I wait for new handrail knobs, and having once again failed to buy the required plywood for the baseboard, today I have been working on wagons.   Fitting bill Bedford springie bits, along with the parkside / Cambrian brake bits to a 13t sr mineral, a parkside lner 5 plank, 1 plank and van, a Bachmann po mineral and a Bachmann conflat.   The latter two wagons have received replacement underframes from Cambrian leftovers, but still need brake gea

More coach painting H26/H33

Last night I finally made a start on a job that has been awaiting attention for far too long, painting the roofs of coaches.   At last count I currently have 7 Centenaries, a H26, a H33, a Large Window first, 5 Mainline sunshine stock and 8 Hornby Colletts that all need the roofs painting grey. The centenaries etc. painted earlier in the summer being the most pressing (which also need the ends painting black and lining / windows added.)   So I have started with the roofs, it has taken me a

More centenarys

Last night saw further work on the Centenaries, which are now rapidly approaching priming.   The first task was to fill the joint between the doors and sides with a couple of applications of Squadron White Putty.   Attention then moved to the ends of the Restaurant pair. Unfortunately when working with the sides I based the conversion on minimising plastic removal, and didn’t read the instructions. Net result I have put both on the wrong way round! So the next task was to carefully carv

More castle renumbering: Spitfire pt 1

While I wait for my latest order of plates from Modelmaster, (this time covering King George V, Beenham Grange and of course Spitfire, once again taking advantage of their 22% off code.   So having received another Wellington as a Christmas present, it's time to start the renumbering.   The actual renumbering can wait until I receive the plates, but I have made a start on the tender. Clearly Spitfire needs to be modelled with a 4000gl Collett tender rather than the Hawksworth supplied. Th

Monday Night Modelling: Some Painting

After the very rare occurrence of getting home at a sensible time during month end reporting, I have managed a little bit of Monday night modelling.   First up the J12 sleeper, this has now been fitted with vacuum breaks (including the brackets) which had been removed from a Bachmann mk1 BG that had been converted to air brakes.  Battery boxes were added from an ABS casting, but it still needs the dynamo (a casting that needs fitted to a few of my coaches) and a second small electrical

Modified Iron Mink (MRD/Ratio)

At Scaleforum one of the key purchases on my shopping list was a set of handrail brackets for a couple of Bachmann Toads from MRD. While I was there I spotted the etched replacement doors for Iron Minks, which comes with a brass roof and break gear. Seeing as I have an unbuilt ratio kit in the to do pile I couldn’t resist.   Tonight I made a start...   The first job was to remove the unwanted detail on the door and underframe,   Next up was building the basic kit   Then it was onto

Modified Hall pt7: Finished (Almost)

So with an envelope from Fox waiting for me as I got home from work yesterday, it was time to crack on and finish off the Modified Hall.   The first job was to prepare the plates, as ever its a very tedious job removing the fairing from the bottom of the plate. This is made a little more difficult by the fact that Fox's plates seem to be a little thinner than Modelmasters and hence more prone to deformation while cutting / filing. As ever I wish I could just buy the nameplate on its own for re

Modified Hall pt2: an experiment in lining

A little more work on rebranding of my modified hall, as mentioned previously I have started redoing the boiler lining from bachmanns red to orange. In each case the transfers were pressed into place and the backing paper was removed with microsol (with the aim that it would soften the transfer over the boiler band.   It looks a little scrappy in closeup, but at about a 12 inch viewing distance it doesn't look too bad. I do think that I need to buy some waterslide transfers to see how I get

Mitchell Manor Pt9

Another evening of minor detailing, and the Manor body is finished.   This included adding a Gibson saftey valve bonnet cover from the scrap box.  I would have usually used a better quality two piece set (as should have been in the kit) however as it will be painted I don’t need the separate brass part.    The topfeed pipes were formed from some scrap wire from a Disney light up wand that one of the children stepped on and broke.  The other wire is copper coloured and will be

The body for 7808 is now rapidly approaching completion, last night’s effort was a start on fitting the detail components.   Buffers (from the scrap box) were soldered on to the buffer beam, while the plate was soldered between loco and tender.  White metal castings for the smokebox door, smokebox saddle, mud hole doors, and a few other small bits were glued in place.  The outside steam pipes were a bit of mixed bag, with the brass example shorter than the other.  This needed lengtheni

Last night the build finally reached the stage I am much less comfortable with, the firebox / boiler.  While I am happy forming angular components, or those with a continuous arc, forming Belpair fireboxes or boilers is a lot more worrying.  Its one of those jobs that I wish the kit would come with a set of spare wrappers so I could have a second go…   Anyway, yesterdays work started off adding more small components (snifter valves), and working out which part was the sandbox filler li

Picking up where I left off the first task on the list was to get the cab roof fitted. I starting off with the beading around the edge, slowly soldering into position as it was formed to shape.   The rear roof support was soldered in place between the cab sides, before fitting the roof etch into position.   the next step was to add the box onto which the screw reversed fits, it would have been easier to fit this before adding the roof.   This was followed by the cab
