56xx - Research & Reference Photographs

The 56xx class of 0-6-2T tank engines were infrequent visitors to Oswestry, from what I can find only one a year would receive attention during the 1954-1959 period. These were predominantly 84E Tyseley or 84F Stourbridge Rd locomotives employed on freights and passenger workings in the Midlands. Locomotives of the Red route class had to navigate their way to the works at Oswestry via Gobowen with only a handful of sidings unrestricted for their weight category.

 

This chart shows the entries recorded for the period 1954-1959 (excluding 1955):

This trend continued right up until the closure of Oswestry Works, with 6644 being captured on camera as late as June/July 1965 (note 9F behind!):

I picked up a late crest Bachmann 56xx from the RMWeb Classifieds recently, this will be detailed an likely modelled as one of the later visitors to the works. I'm really looking forward to working on this class, it's always held a fascination with me since seeing the layout "Blaenavon" in Railway Modeller in the mid-1980's.

 

5643 is currently visiting the Bluebell Railway which was a nice surprise when I was there recently to get photos of 9017. Only problem was there was no chance to get any detail from the boiler/tank tops!

If your zeal for detail includes pipe runs and such, beware of following preserved examples too slavishly. Most have been in preservation longer than they were in service and many have detail mods, (for sound engineering reasons I'm sure) not seen during their first lives.

Good point 28xx! That makes a lot of sense, I'll bear that in mind when cross referencing against period photographs

Hi All,

 

The best reference for this would be No. 6697 as she was bought from BR service and has never had the full works treatment in preservation. Interestingly she still has the period welded lower tank patch repairs that were a common thing to see back in the day but obviously not something that preservationists want to replicate but it would be interesting to see on a model!

 

I am fairly sure the device on the front of the tank on the driver's (right) side is a lubricator pot. The device behind the cab step is an injector (singular) well done!

Hi Castle, that's a good reminder about the repair lines, I've seen some photos of various tanks in the shed at Oswestry with patches.  Definitely an interesting feature to replicate on a model. 

 

Thanks for the tip about 6697, I'm planning to go to the gala at Didcot this weekend, I think that happens to be where 6697 is based?

As I remember those Tyseley 56xx's were used for most suburban trains out of Moor Street, including 'my' line, the North Warwickshire to Stratford and beyond. They were a fascinating sight on the Moor Street traverser, parts of which are still there as a reminder. The parts as such are the spaces under the platforms.

I like your attention to detail and visits to the prototypes. More difficult for me a lot of the time!

Cheers Focalplane.  It's helped get a different perspective on the locomotives I'll be detailing, as in the works they will be stationary and under the macro lens so any extra small details I can find will add to the atmosphere.  

Castle thanks for the heads up about 6697, she was at Didcot this weekend and I got a few more photos and ticked many others off the reference photo list!

This is virtually the same as my own plans, as I too recently acquired a Bachmann 56xx and plan to renumber it to 5643!!  Mind you, I'm doing it as I rode the footplate back in 2009 at Llangollen and wanted a model of it ever since...!

 

On that note, has anyone got any ideas as to how you replicate that beautiful gloss sheen on 5643?  The one I bought is 5601 which is almost completely matt...  I have the Modelmasters transfers to line and renumber it, but that finish....!!

 

Great pictures; may I 'borrow' some for my own project?

Morning David, great I'm glad the pictures were useful to you, of course use them as you need for your project, I can get you the full size originals if required (though I think they are on flickr already).

 

Regarding the sheen, have you seen Tim Shackleton's use of Klear floor polish? He has some good examples of locomotives with the cleaned with an oily rag look, though I think 5643 here is even cleaner than that!  But it could be a starting point,
