One that nearly got away... a Ks Black 5

As a student at Leeds University I became a member of the Leeds Model Railway Society in 1976. I attended the Exhibition that year in October (Thursday, Friday and Saturday opening in those days in a dark (and cold early and late door) Corn Exchange. I was asked to help to operate a layout by Nicktoix which was also linked to the Wigan Wallgate/Gravity yard built by Mike Edge.

I had a brief overview of how it all worked and.. off we went. One minor problem was that A Ks Black 5 in LMS lined Black (built and owned by Nicktoix) has shed its cylinder and valve gear on one side. OK so long as you kept that side away from the public.

Move on a few years and Nick decided that late period LMS was a bit late for him (he had built Windermere in LNWR days and Buckden in early LMS/MR days. He knew I liked Black 5s so it came to me. The cylinder and valve gear had long since been refitted. I repainted it in BR lined Black ready for further use.

Mike Edge took the loco away to sort out the wheel flanges so that it could work on Herculaneum Dock......and then... well he has a lot of locos to build and... this week it came back home

I will repaint the wheels and weather it for use on Chapel en le frith and my own layout (when I get time to build it!)

So a loco at least 41 years old and going strong!

Nice memories Baz. I'd forgotten about the Nick/Mike combo layout. What was Nick's bit called (pre-dated Denroyd Mk 1 I think)?

I seem to remember spending most of that show operating New Lydney.

Without any disrespect to Nick, I would guess that as a K's kit it might have run better with only one set of valve gear...

It was something like Eem.. a scene with a Limestone works... I started off operating the 009 rabbit warren but escaped...

It seems to run well for its age.. Romford wheels and a big X04 type motor,
