A steam loco comes to the rescue!

I once dreamed of a steam locomotive coming to rescue a downed electric train, thus proving the importance of steam.

Well, our good friend 60163 ‘Tornado’ has done just that. Taking time from her own schedule to push the Class 90 to Doncaster:

What would we do without our modern-built steam?

(If there are any photos of this, could you please show them? I’d like to model this rare event! :) )

Brilliant! Just what we want to see these days.

I once joked that Tornado’s last 100mph run failure was because the Mallard sabotaged the run to keep it’s 124 mph record intact :)

Obviously really - the '90' must have now been fitted with batteries or a 'last mile' diesel engine :)

Reminds me of one of the few stories my father told about his time in the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers or as dad always referred to it Rough Engineering Made Easy) 1944-46.

One day his team were called out to lorry which had failed.

When they reached it they found the brakes had gone.

There was nothing that could be done on site so they

decided to assist it back to the depot.

So that they could hold it back on downhill sections,

they attached their breakdown truck to the rear of the lorry

with a push pole.

This meant they arrived back at the depot with the supposed failed lorry apparently towing the breakdown truck.  This story soon circulated around the depot; they let it run for a few days, then explained why they had done what they did. The boot was then on the other foot.
