Avonwick the future....

Kris

Whilst driving home and last night I spent a few hours thinking about the development needs that Avonwick has at the moment. Considering this and the comments that have been popped on my previous blog I have now started to plan for the future.

Lighting is still an area I have not got any further with so there will be no illuminating comments about that from either myself or farmer Giles at the moment.

Continuing on to the continuos run theme I think I am now getting somewhere, in my head and on paper only at the moment. At the moment I'm felling quite spurred on and have some time to spare so things might start happening quickly in this area. I am looking to have most of the new section vaguely scenic, using a variety of locations on the line as inspiration.

So Avonwick developments might well be...

  • - Convert from end to end to continuous run.
  • - Only one fiddleyard.
  • - River crossingbased on skew bridge between Topsham and Loddiswell.
  • - Road underbridge based on road bridge between Loddiswell and Kingsbridge or bridge just outsideof Loddiswell station.
  • - Tunnel tomask join from Avonwick to rest of layout. Based on Sorley Tunnel.
  • - Curved sectionsto be hinged to fold in middle giving shorter sections for transport.
  • - Rear 6ft sectionto be single piece. Much of the track on this section should be on a slight embankmentbut raising to be level at both ends.
  • - Max widthof sections = 20cm
  • - Total spacerequired for set up = 11†x 5’.6â€
  • - Legs on rearsections will be narrower than on main board so will need additional width addedat base for stability. This additional width will protrude into the central areof the layout. As this area will not be generally accessed there will be no triphazard.
  • - Fiddle yardwill be on the right hand (Kingsbridge) curved sections consisting of 3 throughsidings, the longest being approximately 5’ and the remaining pair being 4’. Isee this as giving space to hold a short goods train, a loco hauled set of coachesand space for 2 DMU’s (utilising the same through line). Should other stock berequired then this would be added during the course of a running session.
  • - Total runninglength would now be around 27’.
  • - If possibleI will build this so the new sections can be attached to either the rear of thefront of the layout. This might turn out to be me in pure dream world though.

One of two river crossing under consideration for new Avonwick (Kingsbridge branch) sections.

Edited bit

- A very draft bit of planning to show the changes.

As to scale in the plans, nah didn't bother with any of that malarky.

Hi Kris,

Good to meet you at the EXPO - Very nice to see Avonwick as well. I think the high backscene and proportions work really well and for me, the layout has a good sense of depth/train in the landscape feel too.

The above plans sound very exciting...any chance of sketching out a track plan so I can reread it, digest it and try get my head around your proposals a bit more?

Plans scribbled and sorted Pete biggrin.gif

Nice one Kris - really helpful and helps put your text in context.

It will certainly transform the size of the layout from the original Avonwick...I guess that seeing Fencehouses had nothing to do with that decision  ;)

The plans are a little misleading here as it will end up being about 900mm shorter (well if my woodwork works!) than the existing combined length. Width wise is another matter. It's increasing from just over 300 to somewhere around the 1600mm mark.

As for Fencehouses, it looks fantastic, but the amount of grief I would get for even suggesting something of that size at the moment laugh.gif No I don't think I'll even go there at the moment, the future however, well we'll just have to see.

I rather like the roundy roundy if you have the room. It greatly increases the ratio of scenic space to fiddle yard.

Nick - No helix's this time, I shall endeavour to ensure this.

Don - I'm luck enough to have the space to be able to put up either design, it's just I can't keep the whole thing erected. I do agree that it increases the scenic space to fiddle yard area which is defiantly positive. The design of the main board will mean that the the existing and new scenic areas won't flow into one another. I can't easily alter this so won't be trying to.

I might consider using this joint area to display some layout information. Hopefully this will hide this discrepancy somewhat.

I think if you have an obvious break of at least a couple of inches. As high as the backscene and painted dark I think people will accept that the two scenes are separate. Particularly as short branch trains will be less obvious if showing in two scenes at once. You could also have a scene name for each on the lighting pelmet.

I like that bridge too- There were also some more spectacular iron bridges between Gara and Avonwick that would be worth considering. At least KB is a single line branch, which greatly improves space saving, even on a round. Funnily enough I was looking at this same issue myself. I would love to have a contnuous run but there's no way I can do it now and stay close ish to prototype.

I really want to do some more scenic sections, into the Avon valley and Gara Bridge station, but these will have to wait until the current sections are done. The steep gorge section between Gara and Avonwick would be amazing to model, really dramatic. Looking forward to seeing pics from expo and how the above sketches pan out.
