Brewery Project: Back of an Envelope Sketch

Just now I grabbed a couple of snaps to illustrate the Brewery Project's likely track plan all in an area of 4ft x 2ft 3inches, kicking off with an early rough sketch which will be used as a bases for a proper layout plan. Note the sector plate to allow access to hidden sidings behind the backscene. The headshunt seen on the above sketch will allow a small loco with just 2 SWB wagons - a shunting puzzle should be fun!

The track plan has started to be marked out roughly full size onto some sheets of A3. The trackwork in the foreground is one of the reasons why ready made track would not work here. I'm looking forward to hand laying the track, not having done any since Catcott Burtle 3 years ago which used C&L components. For this I have ordered code 55 flat bottomed rail from C&L for that light industrial look

Earlier in the year I had the privilege of photographing Brian Harrap's excellent Quai:87 which features lots of clever trackwork. See Brian's layout in print soon in the popular model railway press.

On your track plan in the photo you have a wagon turn table marked - wil this be operational ?

If 'Yes' - follow-up questions include 'How will you make it turn? " and "How will you move wagons on and off ?"

Looks good Chris - and I guess the only way to get some interest in a small space - wouldn't trackwork like that have been a bit expensive for a brewery? I guess it would depend if it was rural where they had the space to lay track out with cheapest pointwork, or industrial location with no space so track was cheaper than land. What's the setting? Urban or country? :)

Would also work with the small Bachmann 03/04s I expect - for a more modern period. Some breweries had their own locomotives, both steam and diesel. When researching the 0-4-0 Sentinel Diesel Hydraulic shunter I found plenty of brewery based ones - nothing available RTR though I guess for a quick project.

Is all this trackwork going to be inlaid into cobbles? I can't wait to see how you tackle that :) I'm sure with a really cunning and effective solution as usual!

Reserach has shown that the Victorians made many breweries works of art with little expense spared unlike lesser industries. Photos illustrate that some pointwork was surprisingly complicated at these old industial locations with all sorts of configurations some far more complex that this.

Some track will be inlaid in cobbles 'Brian Harrap style' and some will be in clinker to show off the flatbottomed code 55.

This layout, unlike many of my others will have an air of affluence about it rather than heavilly run down. It is also to be used as a demo layout/display for the new Model Rail/Dapol Sentinel.

Location will be small town canalside edge in the Bath/Bristol area.

Stockwise, apart from the Sentinel when it appears, I have several small 1950's BR locos that will be ideal. A Roxey 0-4-0 diesel shunter might make an appearance at some stage

For the wagon turntable and manouvering wagons on and off it I am developing a tiny radio controlled horse and miniature robot chap that is just 1 inch high. He will also have a real working cigarette. The horse will have a tiny speaker inside it to allow it to 'winneee' too. :P

Looks great Chris, more inspiration for us. Always wanted "to do" a brewery since Railway Modeller did a track plan a few years back.

Another loco that would certainly suit a small brewery would be a small Nonneminstre Models Planet like this (but a bit smarter), several similar sized locos were used by Bass for light shunting. Perhaps painted a smart red and fully lined?

You probably are..., but I bet he won't have a working 4mm scale camera !
