I've started a Blogger blog to keep the history of this project in one place so please do check it out here: http://ejklr.blogspot.com/

I will also make updates on this, my workbench thread for those 'smaller scale' modellers more interested in the journey than the details themselves.

My father and I took a nostalgic trip down to Ontracks at Pontrilas today to collect the start of this project. It's a road trip that we used to make every year to see my Nan, Dad's step mother every Christmas so it was fun to make the journey together again.

The model shop was very welcoming, and we picked up our stuff no problem. After a quick browse we headed for home via a stop at Llanfair for some photos and inspiration.

A lovely day out and a reminder of how picturesque the Welshpool and Llanfair really is! Now roll on Christmas and a chance to play trains!

EDIT (for Will):

Revised MkIII plan - yet to go live on Blogger...

Looks and sounds like an enjoyable start to your project, James. I know I always go on about the "human dimension" of model railways, but I think you've found a new way to show that with this little narrative about your joint family project.

I especially like the photo of the coaches - there's a lot of atmosphere in that shot, especially in the enlarged version.

Ontracks doesn't look particularly welcoming in your photo, though :D

Thank you Mikkel - your kind words are very welcome. I shall endeavour to continue to capture the human aspect of the project as well as the more 'technical'.

I bought some ballast from Ontracks recently, it's nice to see where it came from!

The LGB stock is gorgeous, love the little diesel especially. I was going to ask about plans but I've just found them on Blogger - looks like a good start. Do you have enough space for a branch off the loop eventually?

[edit: I don't seem to have the right account to comment on your other blog, but there are some lovely pics there - I really like the composition in #1 and #4.]

Hi Will - they've got the end two units - must be cheap as chips to rent them - they're in the middle of nowhere in Pontrilas really! Shop is tiny but the chap who greeted me was very friendly and helped me carry the stuff out to the car.

Yes I think the diesel is a big success, bags of character and quite chunky - but nice and small too... with these sharp R1 LGB curves (600ish radius) you don't want long stock! I've got a second pair of coaches coming, a gravel ballast hopper and a post van to supplement the coach and open wagon the set comes with... all sourced second hand.

I've started sketching too - to get a feel for some of the angles I want to achieve in the station area before things become to 'set in stone' so to speak.

I think the MKII version of the plan on blogger will never come to fruition as after lengthy discussions with Dad yesterday he's keen to go straight to MKIII (see above - I've edited the original post). This is an L shaped loop with two stations, and makes use of an existing low wall along the edge of the patio - but would still need a lot of wood/stone work to bring the rest of the ground up to level - the advantage, as he put it, is that he can help Elly put things on the track and play with it... so it's having the desired effect of giving him something to think and work through and build some energy and enthusiasm for something again :)

Thanks Will - yes they were lovely photos and remind me of a very happy day back in May :)

You should be ok with a Google account - if you have one? I'll see if there is an option to control how comments are made next time I look at the dashboard in Blogger.
