A little update...

Hello.

Its time for a little update to tell you all about what I have been upto...

Firstly I have now started a new job which is good and a bit of a relief! Of course the down side is it has taken a large slice of my spare time so right now modelling time is limited mostly to weekends.

The trackwork on Highclere is nearlly there. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out a problem with the MERG servo controllers though which has been slowing me down. For some reason at the moment I cannot program the controller chip so therefore I cannot operate the points! Its only a matter of time until its fixed as there are a few possible solutions that not only myself but with the help of a really nice MERG guy by the name of Trevor (thank you Trevor) and so normal service on the layout will resume soon.

Finally some of you might be aware but I am managing to squeeze in a bit of chassis building, the results of which can be found on the RMWeb Showcase (the first post is HERE, the second HERE, the third HERE) Its a chassis for the 2mm Narrow Gauge diesel I built a short while ago and posted on here about (link thingy). Its something a little different from what I am used to and I have been trying out a few new ideas like CNC chassis, 0.2 MOD gears and a different drive arrangement. For those who dont fancy a bit of surfing here are a few photos...

I like the way you say 'squeeze in a bit of chassis building ' and then come up with something stunning.

Thank you guys :)

Its taken quite a bit of time so far, especially the little 'tweaks' you do to get the thing running smoothly, I have spent some time today rebuilding part of it as I wasnt totally happy with how it run but its now next to me on my table running VERY well !! The aim is to get it finished by the end of the easter break....

Hi Missy, stunning work as always, and at lightning speed!

I can understand the time taken in the little 'tweaks' - my 02 is still being an absolute pain to get to run smoothly!

On the servo subject I read on someone else's blog about trouble with the MERG servo board- he said there was a fault on a batch of them, he got a solution off the MERG forum. I believe he returned his and they replaced them FOC as it was a production fault.

Chassis is another min work of art.

I think it was Edward Sizzling who once said to me that he always buys 2 of each kit as the second one is always better than the first attempt. Some dont have the oppertunity to do that but its a wise comment as inevitably the first attempt will need 'tweaking' to get it right. I have ended up rebuilding this chassis to some degree as I wasnt happy with the first attempt and now always assume that when I build something for the first time it will need rework to some degree. The secret I think is to accept this and not get disheartened by it but 'learn by your mistakes'. The record for me so far is the 42xx where I am now on chassis number 4 (and its still not 100% right!)

Thanks for the tip-off but I am now thinking that the problem might be in the USB to Serial cable I have. From what I gather MERG have recently upgraded the servo controllers from SERVO4 to SEMA and SEMA4 (whatever that means!) which now means I cannot use my servo setting box anymore as its not able to program the chip. The only option now is to program them from a PC using thier software which is way more versitile (and includes optional signal 'bounce') but it does mean using a USB to serial converter cable (as most modern PCs dont have a serial port anymore). I bought the first one I came across on Ebay and didnt realise it had to be a 'null' cable so I dont know if the one I got is a null cable or not. Anyway, MERG Trevor has been very helpful (as MERG peeps are) plus I have now ordered a null cable too...

Hi Missy, What are the overall dimensions for this little loco as looking at the first posting with the ruler next to the milled PCB it looks about 4inches long? I am guessing that I am wrong as the times I have seen Nn3 it has been tiny! :)

Regards

Tom

Hi Tom :)

The loco (body) is a little under 35mm (1"3/8) long and 15mm (5/8") wide, the chassis is 31mm long. A good reference is that the axles on the chassis are 1mm in diameter.

Not quite 4 inches!

Missy :)
