PaternosterRow

Smoke Hoods are now all in - phew! I actually do think it looks better now, but comments/suggestions always welcome.

Been experimenting with a roof finish also. On the last model I used 160gsm light card that was photocopied with Scale-scene's corrugated texture on both sides and transparencies with the same pattern as the windows, but it never looked right. This time I've used 1.5mm card with cut out window openings - the papers have been pasted on and transparencies with the corrugated finish have been used to cover the openings. Anyone who might have a better suggestion, please let me know. The roof structure is a lot stronger than it looks and can easily support the weight of the card without sag.

However, the lights are going to be a headache. I'm trying to keep to a tight budget so suggestions from those with plenty of experience with LEDs, grain of rice bulbs etc would be gratefully received.

I think you are doing a cracking job. I see health and saftey have been at work in the real shed. Dare anyone to be stupid enough not to see the large hole and fall in it.

Agree, those smoke hoods look great, can't believe you made them all sok quickly.

I don't have much experience with LEDs I'm afraid.

Use LEDs, bulbs get hot, hot enough to melt through plastic depending on the current. LEDs will stay cool and use less power. So I'd go for LEDs, if you have a look on eBay you can get LEDs at around 50-100 for £5.

Looking great so far!

Cheers,

Jack

This is looking great Mike

Love the comparison shot of the real thing

No need to put in those H+S fences on the model though me thinks... ;)

I agree with Jack, LEDs are the way to go.

I note from the prototype picture that they are using High Bay lights, I wonder what lamps they are using?

Mercury vapour or metal halide will be a bright blueish white where as Sodium will be a bright amber.

in either case they can both be replicated fairly well using the correct colour LED driven at the right level of current.

A fine model all round I must add.

Cheers!

I agree with the school of thought on LED's. They run cooler, draw less current and can also be made to look alot more scale in size and color. They are straight forward to use, providing that you use the correct resistor on them so they dont blow. You can also dim them down by using a resistor of a higher value. Looking at the lights in the shed picture I tend to lean towards them being metal halide / mercury lights. From what I remember of a video taken by model rail recently at barrow hill the light there was very bluish as well. It should be very easy to get some cool white led's.

This is a fine piece of modelling by the way. Well done.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Also the advice with the lights - yes, I think LEDs are the way to go. I'm having a look on ebay although some of the lights available from Express Models look really attractive. It's all about money nowadays so I have to keep to a tight budget (LEDs are really cheap alternative though). Keep the advice coming as it really is invaluable to me.

Regards

Mike
