Par Station in N Gauge - track ballasting and painting

cornish trains jez

Good afternoon all,

I have managed to progress board 3 of the layout (or the London end of Par station) over the last week or so. Ballasting has taken place and the track has been painted.

I first painted the rails in Phoenix "rusty rails" colour, then a week wash of track dirt to take the sheen off the sleepers and blend the rusty rails a little. The ballast is a 70/30 mix of Woodland scenics buff and brown. I used this successfully on my swiss layout and having studied the many photos of Par during the 80's, this colour seems to fit nicely. Once the ballast was dry, I then dry brushed sleeper grime across the tops of the rails and ballast on each side, giving the ballast a subtle weathering and again blending in the rusty rails and the earlier wash of track dirt.

Below are some photos with some stock appropriately positioned to add a little realism.

Almost forgot to say, I have also started building up the embankment next to the bridge with some polystyrene blocks, which have been carved to shape. More to come and a separate blog on that one to follow soon.

Paved section on platform now painted. Still needs some weathering, any tips would be greatly welcome.

Brilliant modelling Jeremy.

The ballasting looks good-nice and subtle. The track work is nicely weathered too.

I really like the weathering you've achieved on the the locos which again looks right.

Out of interest. How did you do 37672?

Having stood on Par Station many a time I'm looking forwards to seeing this progress.

Just need a 2mm scale John Vaughan now!

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Mark! I can't take credit for 37672 as this was a professional renumbering with etched plates and weathering. However 37206 is my own work, using a Farish re-tooled class 37. As you say, just need that 2mm John Vaughan taking a picture or two on the platform!!

Very neat and effective ballasting there, Jeremy. Dave

Thanks for your comment Dave! I used this ballasting and weathering technique on my previous swiss layout for the first time and it seemed to work. So thought I would use it again.

That's coming on nicely Jeremy - some nice weathering to the track...

Loving those tractors too :D

Once you have formed the polystyrene formers I recommend using a skim of Sculptamould - lovely stuff to work with.

For the weathering of the platform, try a light dusting with some weathering powders applied with a very soft brush...

Hi Pete,

Thank you for your comments and tips! I'll order up some sculptamould today.

Haven't used the weathering powders yet but I'm always up for trying out new stuff!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Looking good.

My dad had a motorbike workshop in the goods yard area, towards the marshy trees. May be a bit before the period you are doing. There are now a load of hideous concrete sheds, let me know if you need to model it, there are no photos of it as far as I know, unless Bailey's seed merchants do, it was their corrugated grain store my dad rented!

Wow only just seen this and the ballasting looks great and that weathering is just stunning! So realistic, well done - a great job... ;)

Do you mind me asking where you got your cable trunking from? (not sure if that's the correct word)

Oli :)

Thanks mate! The cable tray is from the Ratio range. I painted it and then dry brush weathered it. Sorry for the late reply.

Best regards,

Jeremy

No problem, thanks for the reply. Don't suppose you can remember what make and specific colour paints you used to weather the track can you? Looks so good!

Hi,

Once the track is glued down, I first used a thin wash of Phoenix precision paints sleeper grime to take the sheen off the plastic sleepers. Then I ballasted the track with a 70/30 mix of grey and brown ballast. Once it had set, I painted the rail sides in Phoenix paints light rust, being careful not to get it on the sleepers. Once dry, I dry brushed over the tops of the rails with sleeper grime so as to leave a small deposit over the sides of the sleepers and ballast. This will also add extra colour variance to the rail sides.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jeremy
