Yes it is very odd really - if I ran a model shop I would certainly open on Boxing day. Lots of Dads and kids with free time and Christmas money to spend... and everywhere is closed.

I don't have much time for retailers complaining how tough trading conditions are when some just don't want to make the effort when there is money to be made.

Some preserved railways with model shops will be open. Best call in advance to check though.

Would you work all Bank Holidays and High Days ????   I think not

Not sure you have the right angle on this.

We bought our Business truck from Nissan. If he doesn't know how Nissan's Credit Facilites and decisons are arrived at I should get another Accountant?

Bit harsh, especially as he has a family to support and it is Christmas.

I can`t see your point. Your OP did not mention anything about trucks

    Whilst I'm in agreement that Delay Repay is perhaps an unfortunate indicative of the blame culture we find ourselves in, some rail specific points;

1, Its in the sodding franchise agreement, ain't it?

2, For the cost of season tickets currently, asking punters that may be paying thousands of pounds per annum, to not expect recompense for non delivery of a service stinks of a one sided contract, or at least making it up as you go along.

3, The TOCs do alright if it's NRs fault, which "we" pay for via £9bn.

Aside from all that, I'm baffled that you see multi million pound turnover profit led companies as "victims" and the average Joe is somehow attempting to fleece them. Don't draw similarities with the road network either, there's no parity between vastly disperate transport systems.

    C6T.

No need to be baffled though . It is obvious the system is at fault

Not sure what your point is.

Yes the railways operate a delay compensation scheme and there is no equivalent for car travel.

But given that they do operate the scheme, and advertise it quite liberally, I think it is underhand to then deliberately frustrate attempts to make valid claims, which is what they seem to be doing.

I hope you'll agree that a train which fails to meet the timetabled timings is very different to a car being caught in congestion on a motorway.

Maybe we could have a toll system set to control motorway demand with pricing dependent on the time of day, and cheaper prices if you book a slot in advance? (And a heavy penalty if you miss your slot unless you can show it was due to congestion elsewhere on the motorway system?)

My point is all travel is a risk and rail travel is no exception. Why should the railways be forced to pay out when the delay may not be their fault ie weather. Todays society is what is in for us and nothing else

That's the whole point - you can't ring Guildford, you have to ring Camborne where they will call Guildford, get your information and call you back.  You cannot speak directly to the Guildford store

It does beg the question why bother to have a shop in Guilford.

I also did not realise that this was the case

A point well (and civilly) made - thanks. However, where has it been made abundantly clear? Did I miss it on the website? Ot is a customer expected to read the 15 pages of this thread to find it out?

No just think and ring the store and ask you know -- like the old days when you spoke to people asked questions and did not bang off on every7 forum going if you had a " bad" experience

    NEVER AGAIN!

This morning I drove 20 miles from my home to the show which is located in a school/college in a residential area. The car park was full. Was directed to an "overflow" car park which was also full. The stewards could do nothing and just walked away. Drove around for a while and eventually found a space to park on the street about a quarter of a mile away. Walked back to the show and found the entrance queue double-stacked in a dirty, dark corridor with people arguing about where the queue began. Decided this was not for me as did several others and walked out.

I have attended very many model railway shows in my (long) lifetime, of all sizes from the mighty Warley down to tiny shows in village halls with just four or five layouts but a lot of friendly chat. This was my all-time worst experience by a very big margin.

It is hardly the organisers fault that there is restricted parking at the venue a lot of venues suffer from this problem. Could you have gone by train from Wokingham to Basingstoke [via Reading] ?
