  1. Hello, I am planning to use a Gaugemaster walkabout controller with a Gaugemaster wall mounted transformer to provide the supply. Can I simply split the 16v output to run my CDU or will a second transformer be needed independently? Ive always used outputs on the rear of controllers in the past but of course the walkabout doesn’t have this feature so would appreciate a few pointers.
  2. I have used these in the past with a suitable resistor but they run very noisy and was hoping to find something slightly more compact that can be hidden easily.
  3. I’d agree, but have seen so many windmills and water mills spinning seemingly out of control on layouts!
  4. Hello everyone, Any recommendations of a motor/gearbox combo that’s commercially available for running a waterwheel at a scale speed? I have previously used a multi ratio gearbox and motor from maplins (brightly coloured green and orange gears). This needed the speed reducing further with a resistor to get the desired effect from a 12v supply. Was quite noisy and the gearbox large. Does anyone know any improvements on this? Thanks
  5. Exactly what I was trying to achieve. Have been down the route of marking out lines for plank widths but end up binning my efforts. This is simple but looks brilliantly even!
  6. Hi all, I need your help and suggestions please... what is the best method for scribing relief into plasticard? I am trying to scribe neat planking and each result I get is atrocious. A sharp knife blade doesn’t seem to give me a deep enough effect. I’ve tried needle files and the like and end up with dreadful looking wavy lines. I know there will be some expert examples out there. Any help appreciated please!!
  7. I am building some B tankers at the moment. I have used the tension lock couplings supplied with an extra helping of plastic cement to prevent the sag. The couplings are quite coarse but aligned well they don’t give me any issues when running. I would definitely consider fitting NEM and slimline Bachmann though for looks. For weight I have cut some old tubular spanner’s up which fit nicely inside the tank held with a blob of no nails type glue. I also use large nuts and generally anything heavy I can get my hands on. The biggest issue for me were the wheels supplied with the kit. The shallow flange on the Dapol wheelsets cause no end of hassle de-railing all the time. It’s not helped by the longer wheelbase of the tanker as they are prone to any slight twist in the track. But I immediately replaced them with Hornby wheels and the problem was solved!
  8. I thought I would share the outcome of my project to convert an old brake van into something that hopefully resembles a Shark. The van started life as an old Hornby 20t LMS brake van. The body has been completely rebuilt with plasticard, re-using some of the original parts such as the duckets and the internal cabin panels. Handrails are made from the wire inside food bag ties. The same roof was used but altered and the chassis was heavily modified to the correct wheelbase. All detail parts like the ploughs, lamp irons and the ships wheels were cut from plastic butter spread tubs. Very cheap and cheerful build with a host of errors but I’m pretty pleased with the outcome. Before After
  9. If you can find a copy of April 2018 Railway Modeller there is a good article on weathering a 16T mineral wagon in O gauge.
  10. I’m looking for an aerosol that is suitable to respray some coaching stock into BR southern region green. Having just seen the thread on the problems with Railmatch spray paints (my intitial plan) does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative spray? Hopefully a brand I’ve not come across or a Halfords match etc.. Thanks
  11. Afternoon all, I’m building some colour light signals and looking for some very fine cable that will be fine enough to run down through the post - like supplied with the eckon kits. Please can someone suggest what wire to use and recommend where to buy from? Thanks
