  1. Looking forward to this one. Keep us posted.
  2. 1. Cement Quay. After a nearly 30 year absence from the hobby, I came across this by accident and it made me want to model again. 2. Pengwynn Crossing. There's something inherently "right" about this layout and I never tire of seeing it. A good example of the benefits of not trying to cram in too much track. The boys at Bentley MRC are right to retire it for a makeover and I look forward to seeing it after its revamp. 3. So hard to choose from so many but, Matford was one I discovered shortly after returning to the hobby and I was captivated by some of the detail.
  3. You'll be okay as long as you keep the volume below about 45. (CV 63 and 45 should be plenty). I know others on here favour the arrangement but I've personally never seen the benefit. You get more volume from the increased enclosure volume but, I've never been able to hear any improvement in sound quality. If I was going to the trouble, I would fit a bass reflex or make your own enclosure as detailed by Pete Harvey on another thread........which I will try and find for you!.
  4. Hi Kevin I haven't looked at Leaford for a while so I've looked through the whole thread and I must say that you really have done a good job. Yes it's my era and area but the modelling is excellent too. Any outings in the South in the near future?
  5. I'm certainly enjoying this thread - particularly the boats and structures. I tend to refrain from making posts saying, "Great work. Will follow with interest etc" as I find them tedious to wade through when I'm following a thread and I don't want to add to them. Having said that, of course, they are extremely valuable from the point of view of encouragement and motivation........vitally important to the builder. "Great work. I shall follow this one with interest"
  6. With regard to finding the right colour for concrete, I found myself in a similar situation a while ago but found that a little bit of plain old Magnolia in the mix helped enormously!
  7. NSE style station signs please and I like the idea of being able to do A3 size sheets.
  8. So how exactly are you going to fit these swivelling propellers to your trains !!!!
  9. I agree. That 25 sounds really good. I like the stock behind it too!
  10. Got mine yesterday and am now contemplating weathering them. Before I saw the weathered samples that Kernow will be selling, I was fairly confident that I could do a better weathering job than the average, off the shelf version. Having got them in front of me and experimented a little with the grotty brush, it's going to need some careful thought. The usual approach of putting paint on and wiping off doesn't work with the "chrome". It just all comes straight off! I've given one an all over coat of general grime which looks okay but it's really hard to get a consistent finish with a brush. I think I'm going to have to let this paint harden well before adding any more to it. It's going to be a long job doing these. Has anybody else started on theirs yet !!!
  11. Hi Kevin Just looked at the website for Trainwest 2010 and yes, there are some cracking layouts on the list. Oldshaw is also a favourite of mine. Wintringham Haven is one of those where the amount of track has been kept to an absolute minimum and is all the better for it. I just couldn't do that! Keep up the good work and I'll see you then. Chris
  12. Melksham it is then! Takes about the same amount of time to get there as it would, Basingstoke. Cheers for that.
  13. I've been dying to see this layout for ages and was finally going to do so at Romsey. Unfortunately, circumstances dictated otherwise so I'll have to wait....again. When is it's next outing? I see it's not on the exhibit list for Basingstoke this weekend.
  14. Joking apart, a lightish grey would probably be a good starting point as white is so harsh. At the same time I understand that white is useful elsewhere for bouncjing light around a loft.
  15. Looking really good. I like the "open" look too and the spoil heaps. If I may make a suggestion - have a think about the back drop before you attach too much to the walls as painting around all those buildings will be a nightmare. It will also help you build "the look". For inspiration, check out layouts like Cement Quay to see how simple it can be whilst remaining incredibly effective.
  16. The "Kirby" system mentioned above works very well. You can use any couplings you like as long as the hooks themselves aren't magnetic. This rules out the Hornby ones as you say but, in most cases, it's fairly easy to change them. Obviously, if they are in NEMpockets, it's a simple matter of pulling the Hornby ones out and slotting Bachmann ones in. If you have stock with the older style couplings, Bachmann have a number of coupling options that are a direct replacement once you've removed any rivets etc that retain the original couplings. The new ones can either be glued or screwed in place.
  17. Good idea for another thread I think. "50s on freight" Great layout by the way Edit: This photo was taken by Peter Mantle who has kindly excused me for posting it without crediting him
  18. Thanks for that. I thought I probably had it wrong. My real interest is in Quidhampton rather than the Cornish traffic and I know there were some very odd vehicles in and out of there at times!
  19. Now am I getting these confused with something else or didn't these also spend some time in ECC Blue livery? If so, any intention of producing these at any time in the future Dave ? In the meantime, I will be snapping some up as soon as they're available and will be weathering them immediately as the reflection of my face is bad enough without it being distorted by those curves!
  20. Yep. Concur with that. I converted a Jouef one using Fox Transfers to finish. It is a glaring omission from the UK RTR scene though as they've been commonplace on our railways for over 20 years now.
  21. never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level then beat you with experience !
