  1. Just had some U Tube reviewer of new products groupy tell me that a USA 0.6.0. is a Pannier Tank as it looks like a BR WR 15XX. Grief!

      > The GWR only built the 15XX as the S100s they tried to buy from Newbury were poor quality.

And yet according to the records at the NRM the GWR were already designing the 15xx in Jan 1944, long before the SR bought any.

The difference between a pannier tank and a side tank on a locomotive without a footplate can be regarded as somewhat notional. Even more so if it has outside cylinders and valve gear. Some people get very excited about it, making claims about where the weight is supported makes a difference, things like that, which at times verges on angels and pins territory.
For my money if the top of the tanks are roughly on a level with the top of the boiler its probably a pannier tank, and if the bottom of the tanks are roughly on a level with the bottom of the cab sheeting its probably a side tank, and the existence of the 97xx condensing tank engines nicely demonstrates how futile it is to get excited about rigid definitions.

  2. GWR Locomotive diagrams were numbered, in order, A-Z, A1-A999, B1-B999, so Z sorts before A1, A10 before A2 etc. PHP sort routines say "does not compute". I'm looking at creating a page of GWR locomotive diagrams and I'm damned if I want to code each addition by hand, I want a script to do it. So it looks as if I have to write a custom sort, which is a bit outside my comfort zone. Spit.

Just in PHP. It wasn't too hard in the end: I just created a custom sort key:

split the trailing number from the letter

get the ascii value of the letter

if string length > 1 char then

index value = letter value *1000 plus trailing number

      else

      index value = letter value

      and sorted on that.

Its not the being a parent of a baby at 50 that's an issue, its being the parent of a stroppy teenager at 65 that would concern me.

  5. The problem with Swindon standardisation is that the standardisation changed every day

In modern terms Swindon ran what would now be called a continual improvement program. Parts were standardised only so far as they were interchangeable to an appropriate extent, they didn't ossify faulty designs.
