LMS/ BR(M) Royal Scot - December 1947 through April 1951 - before BR standard coaches (MK1)

The reason for revisiting this topic is to find a representative '00' train or trains to run behind the new LMS diesel electrics 10000 and 10001 available from Rails of Sheffield. Motive power substituted if necessary by a Princess Coronation in BR blue.

This summary is copied from another post (very slightly abbreviated) ...
quote < It is fairly safe to assume that prior to 1951, the train would have been made up of pre-war Period 3s, post war Period 3s with the additional doors on the corridor side, and Porthole stock (still under construction in 1951).

However, Carter states that in 1951, "the train became one of the first to be formed of new BR standard stock". A photo of the up train in the book has BG, CK, FK, RFO and RK as the first five vehicles, much the same as in 1954. The RK was one of those kitchen cars with no seating, the diners sat in the flanking RFO and RTO, thus making a three car catering set.

{In June 1956, TO became SO (2+2 seats) and RTO became RSO (2+1 for use as dining cars)}.

Carter gives the 1949 formation (LMS stock) as: Glasgow portion - BTK, TO, TO, RK, FO, FK, FK, BTK and the Edinburgh portion as: BTK, TK, CK, CK, TK, BTK. > unquote

Running 14-coach trains is impracticable for most modellers so I have invoked 'Rule 1' and assume that, for some operational reason yet to be discovered, the Glasgow and Edinburgh sections had run farther south than usual as two separate trains.

Ideally these trains could include Stanier Period 3 stock (limited in '00' to three Hornby types and two from Dapol), post war stock with extra doors (no RTR models), and 'Porthole' stock (five from Bachmann). Most stock numbers modelled by Bachmann were built 1949/ 50 but some BTK were new after April 1951.  In this period the running numbers were at left end of coach but all RTR models have right end numbers circa 1952 and later so some licence or myopia is required. Couplings vary amongst RTR makes and may not always stay connected.

Now, to adapt the last quoted paragraph to '00' scale RTR models:

Glasgow portion - BTK, TO, TO, RK, FO, FK, FK, BTK
BTK   Hornby R4449  (M 5769 M) or Dapol 4P-010-012 (M 5530 M) {both D1905}
TO  Replica  (LMS 9174) or BR repaint {D1915}
TO  Replica  (LMS 9174) or BR repaint {D1915}
RK  no RTR
FO  Bachmann 39-475 (M 7481 M) {D2160}
FK  Hornby R4447 (M 1063 M) or Hornby R4447A (M 1072 M) {both D1930}
FK  Bachmann 39-455 (M 1122 M) {D2162}
BTK  Hornby R4449A (M 5598 M) or Dapol 4P-010-024 (M 5561 M) {both D1905}

Edinburgh portion - BTK, TK, CK, CK, TK, BTK.
BTK  Dapol 4P-010-036 (M 5566 M) {D1905}
TK  Hornby R4448 (M 2001 M) {D1899}
CK  Dapol 4P-010-011 (M 3940 M) or Dapol 4P-010-023 (M 3950 M) {both D1925}
CK  Bachmann 39-465 (M 24659 M) {D2159} or Dapol 4P-010-035 (M 3934 M) {D1925}
TK  Hornby R4448A (M 1842 M) {D1899} or Bachmann 39-450 (M 13154 M) {D2170}
BTK Bachmann 39-460 (M 26755 M) {D2161}

Unfortunately, I do not have any of the Hornby period 3 coaches so would have to rely on Dapol models. A work in progress is to 'cut and shut' Dapol D1905 BTK to D1968 BTK, and some D1925 CK to D1899 TK. Augmented by suitably numbered 'porthole' stock. Not such an easy '00' RTR task after all.

You can always attach Comet sides to RTR coaches to make up the difference.

You may wait a long time for more LMS designed coaches and the chances of a RTR BT Mk1 full Kitchen are low - PC did them as a preprinted side which you glues onto RTR coach sides in Crimson/Cream and full Maroon.
