JLTRT - Class 22 Diesel Locomotive Kit

Hi Guys,

I am currently nearing the end of building an Easybuild Class 121 DMU and in the fortcoming winter months would like to build a JLTRT Class 22 Diesel locomotive.

However, looking at the JLTRT website's description of the kit there are a number of extras that need to be ordered ie delrin chain & sprockets (internal) and 7843/NB wheels from slaters and power unit also from Slaters or ABC.

The advert does not specifiy the quantities of delrin chain & sprockets (choice of 2 are offered, but does not make a recommendation as to how many should be used), Likewise it does not stipulate which make or model of power to be purchased, and I am presuming that two sets of Slaters wheel saets are required.

With the Easybuild kit everything was included and only required the build skills to complete.

If anyone has built the Class 22 from the JLTRT range, I would be grateful if you could fill the add-on accessories gap for me.

Regards.

I've not yet succumbed to temptation with a JLTRT 22 but I guess its only a matter of time.

Brian Daniels of this parish has built one and the build is covered in his thread from about page 94 - http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/1458-brians-7mm-diesel-workbench-prmrp-shark-plough-van/page-94

Brian also has a Flickr site which I've found very useful in that he has an album of each loco he builds - the 22 build is here - https://www.flickr.com/photos/brianews/sets/72157651477064476/

You'll need 4 axles of Slaters 7843/NB as each pack only contains 1 axle.  Don't forget you'll need the appropriate Allen Key for the Slaters wheels too if you don't have one already.

JLTRT sells Delrin chain on their website and on the 22 Kit page you have the choice of 1 or 2 bogies worth.  You only need chain for a motor bogie so it depends on how many motors you are going to fit.  One motor is normally fine for most uses but if you want to pull some monstrous load around a heavily graded garden layout then 2 motors maybe required.

I have used both the ABC and Slaters units and they are both fine.  Brian incidentally tends to use a Mashima 1833 with the single stage Markits (or similar) gearbox - I've not had much luck with these so go for the more expensive unit.

The ABC gearbox is here http://www.abcgears.co.uk/html/diesel_bogie_gearbox.html- remember you need to add a motor (I use a Canon 1833) and specify the WB of the bogie if you want Delrin chain included.  I use the 14.4:1 ratio.

The Slaters unit is GB14 here - https://slatersplastikard.com/others/gearboxes.php

In all cases, I would telephone first before purchasing to ensure the items are available in a timely manner - ABC in particular can sometimes have some long lead times.

Laurie at JLTRT is very helpful and he'll help you with any queries and questions.

A JLTRT build is not a cheap one when you add up all the bits but they are very good kits and make great models.

Hi Tim,

I am extremely grateful for your reply to my post.

As you say JLTRT are not cheap builds, so getting the purchasing right from the outset is a worthwhile exercise in at least making the purchase cost-effective.

I will check out the various links you have supplied.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Brian

It should be supplied with decent couplings, all the JLTRT kits I have built have had them, although you do have do build them and they are a bit fiddly but look the bizz. As for the pick ups, what's the matter with a bit of phosphor bronze wire. ; )

Martyn.
