RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) My Grandfather on my Father's side was a permanent way inspector on the Great Indian Peninsular Railway. As a family we visited him and my uncles in India (Mumbai and Pune) and we, of course, took every opportnity to travel on the railways - including trips from Bombay Churchgate station to Ville Parle (where my uncle lived) on the Bombay "Local" EMUs. My cousin and I were chatting about these times and a challenge to build a model of a Bombay Local arose. The following is the result. The Bombay suburban lines are broad gauge so this model is not a true scale model as it is built to run on OO gauge track - it is more a representation of the trains that I travelled on in the 1980s and 1990s. The coach bodies were scratch built in plastcard and mounted on old Triang Hornby Mk1 coach chassis with Bachmann B4 bogies grafted on. The bogie sides need to be modified to look like the Indian Raiways variants but that is a challenge for another day. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) The driving coach roof was formed in plasticard over a sanded down Triang-Hornby Roof. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) Humbrol enamel cream and maroon paint airbrushed on. The roof was primed with Halfords grey spray primer and then Halfords "Nissan Silver" sprayed on. The roof is not glued in place but held down to the chassis with the original Triang-Hornby brass screws. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) Representations of the window protective mesh added. Not quite correct to the prototype but I think it gives the right "look" to the model. Edwardian
Representations of the window protective mesh added. Brilliant model.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) The motor coach was constructed in similar fashion with a spare Bachmann DMU motor (eBay obtained chassis) shoehorned in. The motor, motor bogie and traling bogie wer wired up to an 8-Pin harness for DCC operation. A Sommerfeldt pantograph was added to the roof. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) Horns and handrails added to the driving trailer. Three coaches now completed. I now need to build at least three more coaches... ...and add the 100's of passengers hanging onto and off the train!!! RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 21, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 21, 2016 Wow, I remember seeing exactly these trains coming in as I was departing VT on the Deccan Queen to Poona. Brilliant model. Thanks Edwardian, I have travelled on the Deccan Queen a number of times. Always impressive seeing how the railway was engineered to pass through the Western Ghats. I have a plan to build the Deccan Queen as well, using a converted Electrotren Vulcan Foundry Co-Co electric loco and a lot of scratch built coaches - quite a daunting task. RMweb Premium Ian Smeeton Posted December 21, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 21, 2016 An absolutely cracking scratchbuild. Wonderful! I do not envy you the task of populating your model, though, or could you run it as an ECS? Best regards Ian

Allegheny1600
Excellent modelling! I love to see such rarely modelled projects as this, well done. I've only ever seen Indian railways in pictures or videos such as Utube but it certainly does look fascinating. Did visit Sri Lanka a while back, where they have the same gauge - it's HUGE! Running on 00 doesn't detract from the modelling skills though, I'd love to see more. Welcome to the forum by the way. John.
MGR Hooper!
Excellent to see someone else doing IR stuff... We ourselves do special commissions for customers and especially deal with IR models. On 25th we'll be announcing a range of kits that the modelling market has probably never seen.Keep up the good work and if you ever need any help with IR stuff ping us.

I took a look at your work on Shapeways - very nice, especially the T Gauge IR, which is giving me ideas about a micro layout. Do you have any plans for any 00 Gauge-ish IR products? cheers Darius
MGR Hooper!
Thanks MGR. I took a look at your work on Shapeways - very nice, especially the T Gauge IR, which is giving me ideas about a micro layout. Do you have any plans for any 00 Gauge-ish IR products? cheers Darius Hi Darius, Funny that you ask, a customer of mine has just asked me to do a few things for him i.e. designing 1:76 kits for the following IR stuff:- MBC MG covered box car MGC MG covered box car MBVG MG Brake van WGS MG II Class General coach (with vestibule) YDM-4 WDM-2 YP 4-6-2 GS MG II Class General coach (without vestibule) SYLR MG Brake coach with ladies compartment The last three on the list being possible additions. Note that my customer plans on using 12mm gauge track to represent MG and 22mm gauge track to represent BG (custom made). Others are free to use HO/OO, EM and P4. I suggested that he use Hollywood Foundry to supply the loco chassis.
MGR Hooper!
I personally will be modelling in 1:87 scale, for BG I plan to use 18.83mm gauge, MG I plan to use 12mm gauge and NG I plan on using 9mm gauge. Recently I designed my first loco which is loosely based on one of the Indian Industrial shunters. But it's in 16.5mm gauge (might keep it or might sell it).
MGR Hooper!
I must add, thanks to your thread here, I have found a dramatically cheaper way to make models. 3D printing was either time consuming or costly for me. After watching you make such a fine representation of the Bombay locals, I decided that scratch building it would be the way to go and using 3D printing for the finer details etc would be a better option. So whilst my customers still prefer using 3D printed kits, I think I'll advance now using your method.

RMweb Gold C126 Posted September 6, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2022 Very impressed. Is there no limit to your talents? Am I wrong in thinking I saw somewhere the release of TT track would be a book for modellers of 5'6" gauge railways, as this tallies with an R.T.R. scale? Or is it that 16.5mm. track would talley with a 3mm:1' Indian Railway model?
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 29, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2023 Nearly seven years later and I am making a start on another driving coach for the “Bombay Local”.
