G scale models - card and kit construction

Recommended Posts

One bogie with working brakes on one wheel. To use a technical term, stuff doing that again. The other bogie has a fake version glued in the off position. Looks, frankly, better than the working one

Mind you... a blob of black paint on the pink beads might help!

Ok, wagon all done now, lettered and with passenger on random packing crate- trench warfare 1st class travel!

Next step is a 4w chassis to be a standard base for 4w open/flat/tipper etc wagons.

Only downside so far - turtle needs weight as the grass proved too much for it and it sat with its little wheels spinning! Was much happier inside though, on a flat surface.

We now have a 4W open wagon - the chassis are standard so a few variants may appear - I like the water tank wagon in particular. The body is removable- just as it was for real.

I have a set of instructions and a printable sheet to cut out for the chassis if anyone wants some 16mm madness.

I must say these models are a lovely bit of model making, something others can take on board and start to produce their own models without breaking the bank

Thank you- and that is why I am posting (other than showing off) - the small wagon probably cost £3, with the main cost being wheels at an astonishing £0.45 each. The rest is time and not too much skill, given that I let a machine do all the hard cutting. However, all the cutting could be done by hand with the bearings drilled at the end.

Please don't get me wrong as I am equally impressed with someone building an expensive loco kit or other stock, but now it seems a lot of those who like railway modelling just want to open a box and play trains, nothing at all with this but many sell themselves short believing they cannot make a model from basic materials, being a child of the 50's I remember the mags of the time showing how to make things from recycled items (card, matchsticks etc) for free, or using basic materials like balsa wood.

For me part of the joy i get from model railways is model making, rather than playing trains. I feel as modellers sometimes we sell ourselves short by buying and not making whether from scratch or kit. But on the other hand many get their pleasure from (for the want of a better description) playing trains

Do keep up the great work, the thread is a refreshing read

Next wagon- tank wagon. Seen some pictures on the net, but this is a bit conjectural.

Same chassis design, two more on the way (bit bored with them now actually!). The tank also comes off to give a flat truck.

card gunpowder van - really needs some weight. That’s a major problem with the card stock, especially with the ones using wooden axles running in card bearings. On the positive side, it doesn’t roll on my less than level track.

glad you like the people. I can’t make specific characters, I just have to go with however they look when they come out, but that’s more fun. They are slowly acquiring names, personalities and back-stories. I’m hoping the layout will be show worthy, and this is part of the way I want to present it- as an moving story.

View of the station building, think there will be space for a small goods shed, loco shed and maybe a bridge. Was aiming for an island layout, but it feels enclosed, so perhaps mills, canals and flat caps.
