Hello guys, couldn't get an update for a wee while because: busy! :this:

Over the weekend, I dipped my toe into the water by doing my first "proper" soldering job - soldering copper clad sleepers.

post-34346-0-68742300-1542747336_thumb.jpg

For the furthest away line, I cut the track first then soldered and due to the curve, it took 3 attempts to get the rails aligned. And managed to melt a few sleepers! :nono: (Good thing it was the fiddle yard...)

And another shot for my first attempt, from a birds eye...

post-34346-0-23054800-1542747586_thumb.jpg

For the other line, I slid off the sleepers, soldered the copper-clad in situ and cut the rails using a razor saw. Much better (for curves!)

And don't forget to insulate the tracks!! (by breaking the copper surface)

I am thinking of going to the Falkirk model rail show this weekend(I wish I could go to Warley!! :this: )

Speaking about the Scottish Modellers group, I know Rodders and I'm pretty sure I have spoken to you at Perth this June, you were making 2mm finescale track if I'm not mistaken. I will probably ask you about this because I am planning to make a 3 way-point and double slip, albeit in OO gauge, Code 100!! :nono:

See you there, :good:

Thanks for that Mark, I enjoyed the show, talking to Scottish Modellers, SDEG, and more!

For the layout, I have picked up all these gubbins, mainly for electrics and even dual-colour LEDs!

I am so sorry the photo's terrible, :nono: but the mix includes Gaugemaster point motors, wire, a multimeter, flux and more!

And, a few photos from the day (sorry about quality issues!!)

Hey guys and oh, by the way MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I am sorry for not putting up many updates recently because: busy (and lazy!! :nono:)

I have put a bit of effort into the layout, it's just when I make a step forwards, I go 6 backwards!! :fool:

For the track, I had to take up, relay, take up, relay and repeat until I was a happy guy!! :ireful:

And I think I have also messed up 2 of my soldering iron tips!!! :banghead:

Frustrations aside, I have taken some photos=progress!!

post-34346-0-72683500-1545761282_thumb.jpg

Much better alingment over baseboard joints now :imsohappy:

post-34346-0-94933400-1545761369_thumb.jpg

Also, kink sorted out!!

post-34346-0-62683200-1545761638_thumb.jpg

And, I think the fiddle yard will look more like a freight yard than the layout itself!!

Finally, why not!

If you are curious, my mum made this!! Absolute craftsman!!

Thanks for reading this far

Can't believe the last update was LAST CHRISTMAS! Since then, not much has changed (EXAMS, HOMEWORK, EXAMS...in the way!!)

I should focus more on the layout, now the dark months are (almost) over!!

Main change is the building up of the fiddle yard road and replacing a straight point with a curved one purchased at Glasgow and that straight point has been placed somewhere else (as these photos show)

IMG_20190323_183107.jpg.19a823f420f4ae44099ba2cadc22aa92.jpg

Used the ZBA to test for kinks (as my track laying is questionable...:nono::nono:)

IMG_20190323_183135.jpg.c1a53aac885df34fd4b2a604243355be.jpg

And this is where the straight point has moved to...

IMG_20190323_183249.jpg.b3ddab2fda7235bc2ffd81e332c1a6d9.jpg

And the curved point that has been sitting there for a month now!! (so lazy, when will I ever get this finished??)

(A little) more progress here, I should have more time in theory due to holidays exam prep!

Still, have to saw the track and add copperclad sleepers but was pretty quick progress for me! (2 days=2 roads)

are you putting in the copper clad sleepers then soldering and then cutting the rails??

Yes, this is what I've resorted to do, I feel it's a better method for curves because when I did my first road, I cut the rails first then solder it was tough tyring to align rail ends together and is still not perfect!! Just a point - put solder on the underside of the rails as well as the sleepers, I forgot to do this and for the 4th road the rails came off!!

Any new updates??

Due to exams, progress has been at a snail's pace, but, they're DONE!!:imsohappy: Just need to get some points to progress with the layout, hope I get them soon.

Very sorry for the late replies, I never check my layout content because I've never looked at it for a while, but I hope I'll churn out more posts and maybe temporarily divert from wagons?????

A (slightly...!) overdue update on the layout, the main "crossover point" (2 points back to back) has been installed and holes drilled for the point motors (Gaugemaster solenoids)

IMG_20190624_170358.jpg.9ba663e9c394bb7fa9390fefd8c6009f.jpg

Terrible camera, sorry!

IMG_20190624_170517.jpg.6a22784c55ab843a27d98d52bd983dc7.jpg

And the curve will split into 2 roads for the fiddle yard, the curve looks a little tight IMO

IMG_20190624_170442.jpg.e265645f401f4e8853e98aee7bbf20c7.jpg

A FNA being tested on the curve, well it glided easily as it's a bogie wagon! (if it didnt, I'd be more than a little worried...)

More soon

Just a quick update on the layout, the fiddle yard is DONE:imsohappy:

IMG_20190706_202833.jpg.4204720ca33c5bb2d5cdc9a35c774838.jpg

So it now has 7 roads all of which are fairly short..!

IMG_20190706_202854.jpg.d294c700fb5017563bb12427c49d487a.jpg

The siding with wagons, half of the 156 and the siding between them was the most recently laid

Now, some progress on the "scenic side"

Now, the tracks to the station (it is a 2 platform station) and a freight siding (VERY close to the baseboard edge!) have been laid, the only thing to lay now is the run round loop for the freight yard and another siding:yes:

Overall end view (sorry, my phone can hardly catch the details!)IMG_20190716_202748.jpg.049fc968f45590b56835c3f2d44832ee.jpg

IMG_20190716_202843.jpg.a765c02c5037563622e65445f733eb52.jpg

Bufferstops have been missed out deliberately-I plan to have bufferstop lights powered separetely so that they are on all the time. The bufferstops are modified Hornby ones

IMG_20190716_202907.jpg.a3ddaaac6b2d4e07be2b4c1e74595384.jpg

The very squeezed point formation - not helped by being laid over an uneven piece of board!! (so sorry about the picture quality!!)

IMG_20190716_202921.jpg.6193971fa7cd9c046efd995369fe3338.jpg

More coming soon!

I've been recently working on the control panel, a simple softwood frame glued and screwed together and MDF for the top surface painted white

IMG_20190727_180232.jpg.a327a72b9a1d7cb1ced8e8cc3f3d2366.jpg

I used Tamiya 10mm yellow masking tape cut with a fresh Swann Morton blade, a Stadler fine tip permanent pen for the multitude of black lines and acrylic paint for the colours.  I sprayed enamel varnish in an attempt to prevent the tape wearing away (how good this idea will work is up to time to tell) and I also had to fix a bodge in the bottom right hand corner!!:nono:

IMG_20190727_183634.jpg.2bb9dd706e9b1eeb3a58f7a4b78fc9b6.jpg

I realised it would look too cramped to incude Signal C so I initially crossed it out before reaching for the sandpaper!!

IMG_20190728_203240.jpg.e71900a19b75595a21253cf4d5a5e339.jpg

I did breifly mention about having independentely controlled bufferbeam lights, so a sanding, drawing and a patch paint (you may be able to discern it on the bottom edge!!) later, it now looks like this. The illustration is a representation of a Train Tech buffer light which I intend to use

IMG_20190729_172117.jpg.1f4d523dfc2cd1a95742c38f76bc33ed.jpg

I have used 3 screws to fix it onto the layout, I don't intend to just glue it in! The toggle switches will go in soon, I hope to keep you all informed of updates

Wiring (of the track and point motors, street lights yet to follow!!) is compl

I've mostly used SEEP (PM1 and PM2) motors, bar one point, which uses a Peco PL-11 with a wire linkage and this is intended to be hidden inside the signalbox. I need to wire in a CDU, as the pont motors are a little tempermental, which I don't have!!:nono:

IMG_20190806_201036.jpg.02a564afd94659356726bc40b93c034b.jpg

PM2 on the left and PM1 on the right. The latter enables for an independantly swithched frog

IMG_20190814_193256.jpg.873df9132f6efedbad44da0b3dc50a73.jpg

PL-11 with wire linkage (1mm thick piano wire) This occasionaly vibrates without moving the linkage!

IMG_20190814_192818.jpg.3f605330ede7a21e0a493741ac82e577.jpg

I've (as best as possible) grouped the wires to separate the 12v DC and 16v AC, but it's a little rudimental

IMG_20190814_193219.jpg.67a703cb0dcf39b8173c87cc40efe250.jpg

The hideous rat's nest of wiring, with loads of PVC tape!!

Hope to keep updated, but school is a thing now (I live in Scotland!) thus, updates will be less frequent

Cheers
