Late 1980s RhB

I was lucky enough to go on holiday to Switzerland a couple of times in the late 1980s and early 90s. Recently my Dad scanned a load of slides he's taken over the years of trips we had on railways together.

On this holiday we were camping near St Moritz and were fortunate enough to have trips over the Bernina Pass to Tirano and also over the Albula line via Filisur to Davos.

I thought it might be good to share the photos here for anyone interested in the lines and modelling them in this period.

Bernina Bahn

I was 13 at the time of the trip.  I remember some of the scenery being 'off the scale'. And looking back at the photos you can see some of the changes in gradients, sharp curves and street running that make the line such a unique trip.

Pontresina station, where the voltage changes and trains from Chur change locomotives:

A Ge 4/4 II with original lights (earlier configuration to the recent Kato N scale model):

Climbing towards the summit:

Ge 2/2 shunting tractor (possibly at Poschiavo):

ABe 4/4 II motor coach in the RhB's most recent red livery on the street section:

Thanks guys.

Albula trip

A few days later we managed to get a ride over the Albula line from St Moritz and on to Davos and back.  Looking back it meant we missed the Landwasser viaduct but it did mean we got a change of traction at Filisur and a full day out riding RhB trains!

Ge 4/4 I (I think this is either St Moritz or Samedan?):

Albula line showing EW I coaches and a couple of centre door coaches closer to the loco:

Albula line, the loco looks like a Ge 6/6:

Passing a very clean looking Ge 4/4 II:

Davos line branch train hauled by a Ge 4/4:

Filisur station on the return journey with a Ge 6/6 hauling the train:

(I think there are a couple of FO liveried coaches 3rd and 4th in the train)

It was a really great day out and I'm glad my Dad took the time to take us.  I think the young lad with the red arm waiting on the platform in the last photo might well be me!

Brilliant photos, lots of historic reference there. Yes those are FO (both 1st class? Very rare!) coaches in that last picture, plus it's not very clear but either the jumbo restaurant is further back in that train, or it's the first time I've seen FO and Bernina stock with the black window surrounds mixed in the same train.

Hey Paul, after all that the other week, look at the coach in the second picture...

The RhB only really restricted some of the railcars by route, with stock it’s just a matter of finding the photos! ;)

Keep the pics coming I’m really enjoying it :)

Hi guys,

I don't have any more 1989 RhB pics to hand but I'll see if my Dad has any in his slide collection.

I can offer a selection from a trip on the Brienzer Rothorn Bahn from about 1983 and a few other miscellaneous Swiss bits and bobs?

I've always wondered what the black window surrounds signified?

Until I looked at these photos closely I hadn't realised the red livery had evolved over time with the different position of the silver band etc.

Yes the logo subtly changes colour the doors change from gold to silver and then the stripe gets wider with bigger 1st and 2nd numbers more recently. The black window surround was just the only way to tell Bernina Express stock at a distance.

Thanks for the pics and yes any of the other ng lines are always of interest too :)
