Scratch building a GWR Hall 4-6-0 and a LNER B12 4-6-0

Recommended Posts

Back to the Hall for a moment: I have finished removing the footplate and wheel splashers. There are a few marks on it but that can be easily sanded smooth. There are a few gaps in the boiler where the wheel splasher were and I'm in the process of filling them with scrap bits of plastic. I have given the shell a few coats of Humbrol No.33 (Matt Black) although i will have to repaint it when I eventually fill the gaps. The next thing to do is to sort out the backhead. In order to get it to look like the photo, I'm going to do some careful filing and drilling to represent the fire hole.

This is new build Saint 4-6-0 2999 Lady of Legend. Note the boiler awaiting cladding. It will look something like this once it is finished.

Here's a view of the firebox end of a GWR 2-6-0. I've noticed that the smokebox is bigger than the boiler around the edges. I'm too not sure if the Hall has this or not.

Here's a view of the same locomotive at the firebox end. I've noticed that the smokebox is bigger than the boiler around the edges. I will have to replicate that.

The bottom picture is not the same loco as the top.

If that is the same locomotive, how did they shrink every component? Haha

The front view of 4930 Hagley Hall's boiler. I've noticed that there is a step between the smokebox and boiler. The handrails on the smokebox are shorter than I expected so I will file them accordingly. I will also have to drill to more holes either side where the supports were. Basically, I'm copying this photo and recreating it in model form.

A closer view of the same boiler. This reveals a closer look of the rust on the boiler and the tarp tightly wrapped around the chimney. It also confirms that there is a slight step between the smokebox and boiler. In the top right of the photo you can see where the safety valve top cover should be (near the firebox).

  • 1 year later...

I brought a complete B12 yesterday at Bridlington model railway show. Well, sort of.

The trader's stand had an array of loco shells, motorized chassis and steam loco tenders for sale.

I saw the chassis first, and I thought of the B12 project that I was doing. The bogie wheels are a different colour to the driving wheels (they're black) but I thought I could easily paint them the correct colour. It cost £5.

Now I had a, hopefully, working chassis, all I needed was a smokebox door and a tender. I had a look for them and came across this:

It looked absolutely stunning and cost £3. I had planned to model the B12 in BR black but upon seeing this I didn't want to paint the tender.

I brought the two and just as I was about to leave, something green in the loco shell section caught my eye:

I knew already had a body but buying this would save me a lot of time. It's already painted and it matches the tender. Plus, it cost £3 as well, so I brought it quickly.

The loco was assembled behind Draxbridge and it al firs together perfectly. The loco is missing a screw beneath the back of the cab to hold the chassis in place but I can easily find a suitable one somewhere.

The complete loco:

A whole locomotive for £11. Bargain!
