After the recent introduction of Northern's new CAF built class 195s to public service the class has now appeared east of the Pennines for the first time, ahead of the start of driver training.

Class member 195105 arrived at Huddersfield on 8th July with 5G18, 07.00 Allerton Depot to Huddersfield.

There are a number of daily 5ZNN paths in the schedule for this week starting at Huddersfield Sidings to either Preston or Blackpool North, via Bradley Junction and the Calder Valley line.  The various return 5ZNN paths appear to be routed via Stalybridge and Standedge Tunnel to Huddersfield.

It's good to see Northern making further progress with their introduction.

A second 195 has arrived at Huddersfield today from Allerton Depot ready for driver training.

195110 has joined 195105 in the DMU sidings adjacent to the station, with Pacer 142014 keeping them company.

A friend who is a driver for Northern had a week in Liverpool doing driver training on these the other week.  I bet that he is going to be the trainer for staff at Huddersfield.  Anything is better than a p***r!

Driver training using the two 195s based at Huddersfield Sidings is well under way with several separate paths in the schedule being used daily.

As far as eventual use on passenger services along the Calder Valley is concerned, it's my understanding that the 195s are destined to be used on the York - Blackpool North services which are currently operated by class 158s, and Leeds - Chester services which are usually operated by a rag-tag assortment of Northern's DMUs.

195105 approaches Brighouse on 26th July 2019 with 5Z02, 14.34 Huddersfield Sidings to Blackpool North.

After a few days stabled in Huddersfield DMU sidings, Northern 195105 ventured out on 7th August as a Very Short Term Plan working 5G95, 14.10 Huddersfield Sidings to Huddersfield Sidings via Todmorden rev., Bradford Interchange rev., through Huddersfield to Marsden rev.

Passing through Brighouse, heading to Huddersfield.

Also, are these to be used on the Nottingham to leeds/Carlisle trains?

I'm not sure which specific services east of the Pennines the 195s will eventually be used on.

Northern intends to rebrand some of their longer distance routes, both east and west of the Pennines, as 'Northern Connect' from December 2019.  The marketing blurb says that "...over 90% operated by new trains".

A bit more information on Northern Connect if you've not already seen it, is here.

According to the August Modern Railways the next areas of operation for 195s "are expected to be York-Blackpool, South Yorkshire (not sure which route(s) they mean there) and Chester (which I take to mean the new Leeds-Chester service)".

Following on from 195107 working 5Z98 from Allerton Depot to Sheffield on 12th August, today it was the turn of 195109 working to an identical schedule, 5Z98, 13.19 Allerton Depot to Sheffield.

I understand that both units subsequently worked on from Sheffield to Worksop, where they will be based for driver training from the facility there run by Harry Needle Railroad Company.

Here's 195109 passing through Deighton on 13th August 2019...

...and about to pass under Leeds Road, complete with the obligatory 'bus on the bridge'.

Another two class 195/1s crossed the Pennines on 19th August.

In a heavy shower, 195113 in the company of 195110, passes through Brighouse with 5G95, 11.05 Blackpool North Car. M.D. to Doncaster West Yard.

They look a bit like something has fallen off at the very front end/back end. Strange sort of 'gap'...…………. there was some sort of 5 car Unit going south this morning out of Platform 11 I think and it wasn't a Voyager AFAICT; the livery was different.

Was it the empty stock of the East Midlands Leicester-York (normally from St. Pancras I believe) shunting out to Holgate Sidings?  It arrived as 1F01 at 1217 and shunted out as 5F01 at 1227.

Thanks; presumably driver training or similar.  I went to the station about 1430 to use the cash point and have a look around, but it wasn't there then.  I now see from RTT the trips were cancelled after 5Z77!

Could have been that. In fact I recognise the train/head-code.

It’s the MML (relatively) slow job from St.Pancras via Derby,Sheffield and Doncaster and return.Extended to Scarborough during the summer.Makes for a lovely day out at the seaside for landlocked citizens of the East Midlands.Recommended.Tried it ourselves a couple of years back.

Don't know if anyone has noticed but there are at least 4 sets of 2 x 3 (I think they are two sets joined) 195s at Harry Needle, Worksop and if not it might be just 4 to 6 x 3 car sets. I could check on Friday this week if I actually travel to Sheffield.

They’re based there for driver/crew training and have been there for several weeks now.

Well thanks buddy, I knew that from a Driver on Northern but I didn't know if anyone else was aware how many were actually there, more than needed for the few drivers available for driver training (both tutor and 'pupil')

Cheers,

Phil

Northern introduced class 195s to the Leeds-Chester services with effect from 21st October 2019.  The diagrams also include some Leeds-Manchester Victoria workings.  Here are several photos from Halifax and Hebden Bridge showing several of the services on the first morning;

On a misty autumn morning 195111 arrives at Halifax with 1D72, 07.36 Leeds to Chester.

In terms of the interior, certainly a step up in standard for passengers along the Calder Valley, IMHO.
