Isambard Kingdom Brunel
How big is the base of a Semaphore Signal? I have a Dapol GWR Home signal in 4mm but the Base plate seems massive. Ive looked for some photographic evidence but all I can see are the signals themselves not a base. I would think it would depend on the size of the post, but, wonder wether I should trim it down a tad? Thanks

great central
If it's any help I posted this in the ghosts in the machine thread a while back. It supported a large two doll bracket just outside Sleaford. Apparently the base is buried and can be quite big, guess it needs to be.
Merfyn Jones
In recent years we have put in a lot of semaphore signals welded to a steel base, very like those on colour lights. Bolted to a 1m square block of concrete.
Wheatley
I think the Dapol base has more to do with covering up the hole needed for the operating mechanism than any attempt at prototype fidelity. Rather than trim it can you rebate it into its surroundings and carry the scenic treatment (ballast, grass etc) over it ?
