Aston On Clun. A forgotten Great Western outpost.

These are some of the photos I took. First BSA owners club rally held since lockdown. We out raced the monsoon all the way back to the lakes.

Where disturbingly perhaps, it was sunny...

Gloomy looking castle ruins.

worrying about the floor of the ford being slippery when the water is 6’ deep is, well, a bit of a rum idea…

The bridge by the ford:

And finally, a photo of a map:

Iain Rice’s plan required some changes to the local geography, and IMO didn’t really fit into the space: shoe horning the track from Bishop’s Castle into the space, but on an S curve, was also rather suspect.

The 1910 (or so) proposals for the South Shropshire Light Railway would have skirted round the town, to the north of Clun Pool, and continued further west up the valley towards Newcastle.

Of potentially greater interest/relevance:

That IS a fascinating piece of information @Regularity.   I had heard of a proposal for a light railway running through the valley but have never been able to find any corroborating evidence such as this.

I have an old Min of Ag OS map on which I had sketched my proposed route.

It leaves Craven Arms with running powers over part of the LNWR line and branches off due south of Sibdon Carwood.

It runs north of Aston on Clun, skirting the base of Aston hill, before  turning southwest, crossing the road into the station, before crossing the water twice, it then follows the route of the actual proposal, south of Purslow towards Clun.

It does remain south of the Craven Arms to Clun road though and I am in agreement with you that there probably isn't room for the terminus to be north of the river with the station yard entrance between the pack horse bridge and the old forge.

I envisioned the railway crossing the river one last time and finishing up in the larger space south of the river near to Saint George's church.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge here. Whilst what I am building is a pure flight of fancy and in no way meant to be representative of the actual proposals, I was attempting to base the fiction around facts and build something at least plausible.

That's impressive and also explains why I didn't find anything. I've never had the opportunity to visit the museum.

Looking at the eastern end though, I don't think that I was too far out. I have wavered between a dedicated line from Craven Arms and a short run down the Central Wales line. I thought that a dedicated line would be a bit of a stretch given the proximity, but I can see that it wasn't.

I could have done with knowing you about twenty years ago! Then again, I'd probably still be on layout MkIV...

This is the old map I have been referring to:

Do all railway modellers like that sort of thing?

No, dear, If you ask me, there's some very peculiar blokes around here...

I can’t believe the title of that film…

It may have had a different meaning fifty something years ago...

Rather like when Hillman cars issued brochures and other publicity material announcing  "A gay new look for 1955...."
