hucknall byron
A few people have suggested that fitting a stay live may be the answer to this so has anybody done this? If so which one and is it a big job. I am fast running out of patience with this otherwise good model which Bachmann to their credit have had a go at for free despite it being out of warranty. hucknall byron
Bit of an update on this. After being put away for about 2 years i thought i would give it another go. Lo and behold after about 2 stuttering circuits it ground to a halt. On close inspection under a magnifying glass i discovered that the tiny wire sanding pipes? were near enough touching the wheels so i bent them out a bit and hey presto smooth running. Great the sound initially went completely but returned intermittently when several different buttons on the powercab were pressed. At a loss now what to do next, any suggestions? I have written to Bachmann in the meantime.
nimbamoss
If memory serves me, this thread had info about poor performance on the 40's amongst others

Albie the plumber
The Class 40 is not one of the best runners . I have one and it oft behaved like yours . I did however get rid of the circuit board when fitting a larger speaker and doing away with those silly copper contact pick ups that rub against the PCB I then ran wires from the shortened pick ups to the ESU adapter board Works better for me . Alternatively, you could fit one of those low priced stay alives that Roads and Rails advertise which can be joined to a V4 or V5 , but not in the same way as the ESU power pack .
IMG
I’ve put an ESU small Powerpack in mine as it was a v4 chip and and changed the cv’s to set the backup time to maximum a couple of years back. It’s fine if the wheels and track are clean too. An extra £40 to solve, but better that than the loco sitting in a box for what is otherwise a nice model in my view. Also check for fluff around the power axles where they join the wheels. I recall that added to the problem. Best of luck
