If my memory serves me at all, many years ago there was an article about upgrading a standard Ratio SR van with a rather odd braking 8-shoe system. Possibly an article in MRJ.

Does any else remember the article?

Thanks and StaySafe

I haven't seen the article, but I have done an ordinary van, and a Banana van, with this type of brake gear (whose name escapes me). ABS did a kit for it; hopefully, these will be available again one day.

There was an article by John Hayes in MRJ 120, describing modifications to the Ratio kit to produce 3 types of SR van, one of which had the Maunsell 8-shoe brakegear.

Pete

That's the one

Thanks

Hi Pete,

Amazing, a copy of MRJ 120 was on eBay and purchased, I recall other articles on improving the SR van but cannot remember the source.

The Southern is not particularly well provided with kits or RTR wagons simply because the Southern was not a ‘goods’ system but I intend to add a little variety to the goods yard.

Thanks once mote.

My photos have several variations of SR brake rigging https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/srvan  with some more as BR also used an unusual SR design brake rigging on vans and shock open merchandise. https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brsrvan and the diag 1/035 at the beginning of this collection show the unusual push brake type well  https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brshockopenwood

Found the article about 8 shoe brakes, it was in Geoff Kent’s second wagon book. Right at the back, a conversion of the Ratio SR even planked van to a Banana van. Thanks guys.

I look forward to the arrival of MRJ 120 for more inspiration.

A Ratio even planked kit has pitched up, as has MRJ 120. Not an easy project as most, if not all of the extra bits are currently unavailable.

However the John Hayes article is helpful for for ‘improving the breed’ and another SR van will join the others.

Thanks
