spikey
What exactly was the purpose of the sliding panel on each side of the tender at the footplate end? And am I right in thinking that they weren't fitted on the tender of C1?
RMweb Gold Right Away Posted June 19, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) Their intention was to reduce the chance of light from the firebox being seen from enemy aircraft in WW2. Also fitted to the first ten Merchant Navy class. As part of the tender design, they could reduce draughts when running tender first, hence their retainment after hostilities ceased.
