Mr Brunel
Saw Flying Scotsman on todays news in black livery. But what do the numbers 103 on one cab side, and 502 on the other relate to? Those are numbers the loco carried at other points in its life. In January 1946, it was renumbered No. 502 (under the LNER renumbering scheme) - in May the same year there was an amendment to the scheme and the number was changed to No. 103. Of course this only lasted until 1948 when the loco passed into British Railways' ownership and became No. 60103. It won't be carrying 103 or 502 for much longer as the NRM will shortly be repainting it into late BR green. The wartime black livery is a holdover from the abortive 2011 unveiling; the smokebox has already been altered to reflect its condition circa 1962 (with the rest of the engine to follow suit - meaning that it will again carry No. 60103). I hope this helps!
