The Great RMweb 2FS Build Off

Hi Tom,

No - the five sided cutting broaches are what you need for this job. You thread them into the hole and turn them to enlarge it. If you have a Hobbycraft store near you, they sell them (here), but be prepared to pay more than if you buy them from a specialist modelling supplier.

I'm really looking forward to seeing progress on your build.

Andy

I bought the yellow set a while ago from Hobbycraft though Amazon is cheaper now, http://www.amazon.co...4/dp/B002Z8IY44 the green set is better for 2mm as mentioned as it goes down to 0.4mm vs 0.6 (ref is PBR2193).

A 5-sided broach is used to open out a hole like a drill but unlike a drill its doing it incrementally and it should guarantee you open the hole out concentric with the 5 cutting points. The smoothing type are just for polishing really. I also own a reamer but rarely use it as the taper is much more extreme than really needed in much of out modelling.

Its useful to twiddle a larger dril on each side of a hole that has had a broach used on it I find afterwards to remove any burr left where the remains of the removed material might be hanging on. Especially useful when you want a bearing to sit in the hole correctly.

The plastic handles are worth covering in something if you use them a lot otherwise you tend to damage your fingers!

Once again many thanks gents.

Craig thanks for the link and info, the order has gone in with the last minute chrimbo pressies

Rich, funnily enough I was dreaming about turning some handles on an imaginary lathe! Hmm wonder if father Christmas could be persuaded to drop one off on his way round.

Andy, Unfortunately no model shops ear me! and yes hope to get started when I'm up north! Progress will be reported!

Regards

Tom

Probably better replaced with a little wooden handle because I think there is just one left in my set where the handle hasn't broken off where the metal ends inside it now.

I have removed all the rubbishy plastic handles from mine and use them in a single ended pin vice with a swivelly bit on the end, a lot more controllable and comfortable.

Nice idea. If I did this I would want to buy at least three more pin chucks so I could just leave them in there.
