RMweb Premium Nile Posted February 6, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 6, 2013 An example of what can be done with 3D printing. I recently aquired a 'box of bits', labeled as good for spares. It turned out to be an almost complete MDC HOn3 2-8-0 loco + tender. Motor and gears are present and working, the main issue is lack of rods, crossheads and cylinders. Most of that could be bodged from bits in the spare parts box, but I thought I would try to recreate the cylinders as a 3D print. Fortunately I have an existing model to measure from to create a copy. Here is the result. Still plenty to do, but hopefully you get the idea. 5D_Stoke
Nice work, a very good example of a use for 3D printing. Is it printed in Shapeways FUD? Mark (5D_Stoke)
Grasslands
Looks great, really looking forward to playing with the software a bit more. Which did you use?
RMweb Premium Nile Posted February 8, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 8, 2013 Yes, I did mean to add that it was made by shapeways in FUD. As it's a fairly solid lump it feels quite strong a should survive in use. I drew it in Sketchup, which is ideal for what is a fairly simple object - a cylinder plus some boxes with a few holes in it.
