Based on Wilton Junction just West of Salisbury but condensed so that I finally have a layout that only needs a car to transport it and not a van.

I started the planning of this on the old forum but as I can't seem to link in to that I'll start with a brief return to the plan development. Aquisition of stock has overtaken getting on with construction recently but a recent order for a pile of weathered Silver Bullets has pushed me on to some scale mockups and tests in full size.

This was where I ended up with the final track plan but it compromised too much on the feel of the real place.

Then I came up with this idea to re-introduce the curve to the quarry, this version has the latest modification with the kick back siding extended off under the bridge on the right to fit more wagons in for outward trains.

A quick sketch to see what it might look like

and a paper mockup so it could be viewed from different angles.

Nice plan... I look forward to seeing how it develops...I remember spending many afternoons after school standing on the bridge that will form the scenic break on the right hand side... if I was lucky I'd observe movements in the 'whiting factory' or looking out for cromptons, vacs, duffs on the mainline... oh happpy days

What no bulleids?wink.gif

Well of course Tangmere is a fairly regular visitor and Taw Valley, Can Pac and Clan Line have been through in the last few years. wink.gif

Even got the NRM Flying Scotsman as it used to be a regular on the VSOE, 73096 standard, Duchess, Union of South Africa, plenty of room for choice on the steam specials and even quite a lot of Heritage diesels too. Thanks to Salisburys location the Cathedrals Express and lots of specials run that way. Browse the Flickr link in the first post and you'll find lots of them. (I just pruned the Bulleid fleet a bit Tom!)

Here are a few of the mockup to test the depth is enough. Pete Harveys Peter St was very encouraging in what could be achieved in a small space.

The road will be 15 - 25mm lower than the track at the front and only one side of the carriageway will be modelled.

Still lots of planning going on and I'm considering upping the length of the scenic part to 12ft. I had some concern over the curved quarry and if the kadees would work so with the recent arrival of the silver bullets I did a bit of experimenting.

I have a curve radius test board that I use to check what radii stuff will run on, this allowed me to fit kadees to the Bachmann 66's and still install the skirt but it does limit them to 24inch radius as the absolute minimum.

Anyhoo back to the silver bullets.

This is the wagons with the shortest kadee (no.17) NEM couplers fitted, it could be even closer so I might consider body mounting later.

I tested it on the 27 inch radius corner and coupling still worked well and so moved down to 24 inch radius which also worked but I needed to test uncoupling.

on the 24 inch Rad curve

So I dug out a piece of R2 setrack (438mm or 17 inch radius) and stuck one of the large kadee magnets underneath.

Well it didn't work in the centre of the track so I tried moving it sideways to see if I can offset the magnet to match the tails on the couplers on the curve. Fortunately it still works ok but will require fine tuning on each one as I install them. (the high tech finger sliding adjuster!)

Top view of the offset on R2 track, this will be less but the experiment proves it will work in this worst case instance so I can go ahead with the curved quarry plan.
