    22 September 2012 10:00      16:00

    The Basingstoke and North Hampshire Model Railway Society is 40 years young this year and the proverbial “cutting of the cake” is to take place during our annual Open Day on 22nd September 2012. The Open Day offers an opportunity for visitors to enjoy – and possibly operate – club and member’s layouts in an informal atmosphere.... together with the opportunity to see progress on the new 4mm and 7mm layouts. In recognition of this being the 40th Anniversary the Basingstoke Society is extending the Open Day with the addition of a Swap Meet.

    As in past years the Open Day is to be held in the Club Hut and the adjacent Scout Hut whilst the Swap Meet is to be held in the Kempshott Village Hall, post code for the Scout Hut / Club Hut is RG22 5HN. All of these buildings are situated in Stratton Park off Pack Lane, Basingstoke - the village hall is about 400 yards from the Club Hut, plenty of free parking at the Club Hut and at the village hall.

    The Open Day runs from 10.00am until 4.00pm (Swap Meet finishes at 3.00pm), admission is £1.00 per adult. For further information please see http://www.bnhmrs.hampshire.org.uk/ .

    [information added 13th September]

    Just over one week until our Open Day on 22nd September. The Swap Meet looks like these eight or nine traders... most are from the Hampshire / Berkshire / London areas:-

    Neil Cresswell;
    A&B Models;
    Ron Lines;
    Brian's Trains;
    Ian the Book (I joke not... that is how he is known);
    Terry Robinson;
    Clive Lewis;
    Neville's Restorations.

    plus a private individual who wishes to sell his collection of die-cast buses.

    Most of the traders are primarily 4mm with a mix of RTR and kits. Ian-the-Book has promised publications which are that little bit different. Neville's Restorations, to quote from his hand-out:-
    "Corgi Dinky Matchbox
    Transform Models
    From old to new"

    The Club layouts will include the current 4mm Lulworth and SE28 exhibition layouts plus several layouts under construction:-
    * N-gauge (which needs a name);
    * Round South, 4mm South London circa 1970-80;
    * 7mm (which needs a name);
    * Nine Yards, a member's 4mm layout;
    * Scruft's Junction, a member's 7mm layout.

    Maybe we need a "Name that Layout" competition?

    Still got to work on "The Cake".... I went to the supermarket to see about the "We print your birthday cake" with a copy of our club logo. Guess the response... "Oh no, we cannot do that without an indemnity against copyright infringement". Speechless!!!!!!!!!!!! The Club logo has been in use for 40 years and none of the current members can recall who drew the logo in the first place. So back to Plan A and a pesky tank engine.

    regards, Graham

    • Immingham Model Railway Show
      By SealionSteve,
         A great show, as always. Some excellent layouts. Thank you to all concerned.
    • Weston-Super-Mare Model Railway Show 2026
      By ianmianmianm,
         Great mix of layouts and trade,

      ....but the floorplan created real bottlenecks around the entrance which was also the route between halls (via the changing rooms!) and so was already going to be busy anyway. But there were further trade stands and coffee stand put there.... creating groups of people lingering and blocking......       why oh why!

      The catering van outside - ended up giving up because as we all stood queuing to buy food, nothing happening in the van, there was a lot of playing with kids and babies but the 4 people there couldn't manage to free up one to take orders.

         An excellent day was had by all. Keep the 30th January 2027 free.
    • SOUTHAMPTON MODEL RAILWAY SHOW -JANUARY 24TH/25TH 2026
      By Robin Brasher,
         Despite South West Trains' best efforts I managed to get to the exhibition on time. I had my doubts when they announced at Southampton Central Station that my train would be running non stop to Waterloo but I got on a Cross Country train that stopped at Southampton Airport. The pictures show:
      1. My arrival at the exhibition on a heritage bus provided by the organisers.
      2. There were a lot of people at the exhibition and a huge queue for the coffee machines. There seemed to be more people there than in previous years.
      3. Essence of Ventnor in 0 gauge was one of the splendid layouts there. I saw it last year at the Brockenhurst exhibition.
      4. Seaton Junction in 00 gauge was another interesting layout. There was an N gauge model of Seaton Junction at Pecorama that it donated to our model railway club so I found it interesting to see Seaton Junction in a larger scale.

      I was not so lucky with my return journey as South West Trains was unable to run any trains from Southampton Central to Bournemouth and Weymouth so I ended up having to catch a taxi to Bournemouth.

    • WMRA Annual Exhibition
      By Robin Brasher,
         Excellent show. plenty of free parking, over 30 layouts, lots of traders and full catering. I liked the scenery on the illustrated 009 gauge Feorag layout set in an imaginary island west of Cornwall. TT:120 seems to be well received with two small oval layouts on display.
