We are pleased to announce that the EM Gauge Society and the Scalefour Society are holding in March 2019 another Skills Day event. This is the first one to take place in Scotland and builds on the successful formula of an informal, informative gathering of modellers. As in previous years, the EMGS involvement is again being funded by the bequest of Chris Kedgley, former Chairman of the EM Gauge Society and active member of the Scalefour Society who passed away in June 2013.

Linlithgow is an attractive historic town on the Lochside, almost midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, with good access from all directions. The M9 serves the town. Four electric trains an hour run from Edinburgh, two an hour from Glasgow. The Low Port centre is across the road from the station. Even in March, for a weekend break the area has much to offer, from Linlithgow Palace, the three Forth Bridges and the Kelpies to the Falkirk Wheel, not to mention the convenient cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling.

As ever, the emphasis will be on showing and telling. So, the Skills Day 2019 in Linlithgow will feature a dozen experienced modellers demonstrating a wide range of skills together with innovative ideas and four layouts will show some of these in practice.

Demonstrations mix innovative techniques with new slants on established skills, and will cover: innovative turntable operation, mechatronics (the integration of electronics and mechanisms), loco chassis construction, ‘stay-alive’ enhancements for DCC locos, modelling rock formations, weathering stone and other materials, controlling servo points, plastic card modelling with the Silhouette cutter, 3D printing, carriage lighting.

    • Immingham Model Railway Show
      By SealionSteve,
A great show, as always. Some excellent layouts. Thank you to all concerned.
    • Weston-Super-Mare Model Railway Show 2026
      By ianmianmianm,
Great mix of layouts and trade,

....but the floorplan created real bottlenecks around the entrance which was also the route between halls (via the changing rooms!) and so was already going to be busy anyway. But there were further trade stands and coffee stand put there.... creating groups of people lingering and blocking......       why oh why!

The catering van outside - ended up giving up because as we all stood queuing to buy food, nothing happening in the van, there was a lot of playing with kids and babies but the 4 people there couldn't manage to free up one to take orders.

An excellent day was had by all. Keep the 30th January 2027 free.
    • SOUTHAMPTON MODEL RAILWAY SHOW -JANUARY 24TH/25TH 2026
      By Robin Brasher,
Despite South West Trains' best efforts I managed to get to the exhibition on time. I had my doubts when they announced at Southampton Central Station that my train would be running non stop to Waterloo but I got on a Cross Country train that stopped at Southampton Airport. The pictures show:
      1. My arrival at the exhibition on a heritage bus provided by the organisers.
      2. There were a lot of people at the exhibition and a huge queue for the coffee machines. There seemed to be more people there than in previous years.
      3. Essence of Ventnor in 0 gauge was one of the splendid layouts there. I saw it last year at the Brockenhurst exhibition.
      4. Seaton Junction in 00 gauge was another interesting layout. There was an N gauge model of Seaton Junction at Pecorama that it donated to our model railway club so I found it interesting to see Seaton Junction in a larger scale.

I was not so lucky with my return journey as South West Trains was unable to run any trains from Southampton Central to Bournemouth and Weymouth so I ended up having to catch a taxi to Bournemouth.

    • WMRA Annual Exhibition
      By Robin Brasher,
Excellent show. plenty of free parking, over 30 layouts, lots of traders and full catering. I liked the scenery on the illustrated 009 gauge Feorag layout set in an imaginary island west of Cornwall. TT:120 seems to be well received with two small oval layouts on display.
